I visited there recently. Many positives to their country. It is also evident in some ways that they are a conquered people.

We would claims sovereign citizen rights and not have to do it.

Somewhat like the American Confederacy. The south was a conquered people and subtlety reminded of it for a hundred years.

Why makes you think Japan wants that to happen? Japan literally pays the US to help cover the costs of the bases

It’s basically like hiring security for your home/business if it’s large and you lots of people to protect

There was nothing subtle about Reconstruction or Yankee contempt for the South post Reconstruction.

What would happen is exactly why they won't ask that for the foreseeable future:

How about you explain to us why Japan would want to boot the most powerful military in the world off their land? Why would Japan want to use more of their money when the US is willing to use theirs?

I’m pretty sure the US has rights to stay & operate military bases since Japan’s surrender at end of WWII

I think he was just asking a hypothetical out of curiosity.

there have been local outcries in the past to oust us, usually after a GI is arrested/charged with rape near a base, seems like that used to be a common occurence at Okinawa

The real answer is we would engage in some serious discussions about the implications of that. If they are still adamant, we'd transition into negotiating the logistics cost of extracting American personnel, equipment, and infrastructure of intellectual value. We'd also have to negotiate base closures and property selling costs, etc.

In the end it would fall apart and Japan would decide to stick with the status quo.
