Would you say the video rental business had about a 25 yr run?

Say from 1985 - 2010? I’ll tell you one thing, in the heyday, I knew some folk making some significant money renting VHS/DVD’s….at the time it probably seemed like it would last forever.

I'd say 2009
WTF? Laser discs is where the money was.

One of my best friends growing up had HBO and they had a VCR. They literally had a wall of shelves in their living room with hundreds of movies they had recorded. And they had it catalogued and everything.
It was one of the coolest things to me as a kid, and likely one reason I started collecting physical movies and have such an absurdly large collection now.
ETA: isn’t there still that one Blockbuster Video going in like Oregon or whatever? So could we technically say the run is still going?

I remember it used to be a big deal having a VCR and a , whatever you call it those big movie cameras you could make home videos. Now every one does that with their phone.

Smoking a bowl with your buddies after high school on a Friday afternoon and being all red-faced and way too stoned to be in public and then working up the courage to go inside Blockbuster Video is a great memory.

I miss the feeling of going to blockbuster

I still have my Blockbuster card
I think the last movie I ever rented there was Star Trek First Contact because I didn’t feel like waiting for the Netflix to come in the mail.

Wish we had a video rental store right now, I want to watch Sling Blade and even Prime Video doesn't have it available.

Yes and they have an AirBnb unit in there also

My wife and I talk about this all the time. Going to blockbuster and picking out a movie or 2 and snacks was part of the fun.

I don't miss getting charged a late fee even after I made a special trip to bring the tape back on time. That's why I liked the Mom n Pop video stores. They'd cut you some slack. Sometimes they even had a back room with the porno tapes.

My grandparents owned and ran a little mom and pop video store in the late 80s/early 90s. Even had the porn room in the back. Due to a lot of bullshite involved it was not profitable. They wasted a lot of their time there and ended up with a garage full of VHS tapes they couldn't get rid of.

Lol "Porn Room". You've come to the right place. Any messages yet on selling those tapes? Jim Hawthorne may be interested

It probably won't come as a surprise but the porn tapes were the easiest ones to get rid of. I can remember spending a few Saturday and Sunday afternoons with my grandparents at a shitty flea market trying to sell off the inventory. Needless to say the porn was all bought up in a weekend or two.

I think it was my 10th birthday, we rented a VCR and a few movies. That was amazing.
ETA: My MIL owned video stores and still has several of the rental VCRs in the plastic cases.

My earliest movie rental experiences were had to rent a VCR. It was 10 dollars for the weekend and if you didn’t get there early enough on Friday you didn’t get one. The two hours between the time I got home from school and the time my dad got home from work was the longest imaginable.
