Two small market teams. No big east coast or west coast teams. Just Oklahoma and Indiana.

But frick Adam Silver and the league. This finals is an incredible matchup.

Glad to see it’s these two teams actually. Anytime the evil trinity of NY, LA or Boston isn’t in it is a gift from heaven above.

This is a great match up. I don't care how bad it is for the NBA.

I’ve lost interest in the nba over the last several years, but this match-up is intriguing to me

Might not have the ratings of a Lakers vs. Celtics Finals, but who cares. Can’t have some “big market” team in it every single year.

This. For those who DO watch it will be a great matchup without any 40 point blowouts…

I agree its a great match up but ratings wise this will likely be a debacle

I'm excited for it. But it's going to absolutely tank, ratings wise.

Good for the NBA. It's nice to see smaller markets competing to win championships.

So sick of this narrative. Why even have teams outside of NY/Cali? shite is so stupid.

Will be great basketball to watch, frick the big markets. tNBA has to be the most obsessed league with that shite, I’ll never truly understand.

Two fun teams to watch, but I’d still prefer to see Knicks/Nuggets.

tbh a ton of nba fans are just in it for the hype, drama, names more so than the actual game itself. They just want to see popular guy in big city score points.

Based on current population, Indianapolis is the 13th most populous NBA city and Oklahoma City is 16th.

Indianapolis - 890,000
Oklahoma City - 713,000

NBA cities below OKC:

Washington
Boston
Detroit
Portland
Memphis
Milwaukee
Sacramento
Atlanta
Miami
Minneapolis
Cleveland
New Orleans
Orlando
Salt Lake City

How they still have a team kinda amazes me.

Who cares. The NBA has their TV deal for years ahead so it won’t matter one bit.

Should be a great series.

Metro areas and media markets =/= city limits populations

DC, Boston, Atlanta and Miami dwarf OKC as metros and media markets

Metro population is probably the better measure

These discussions always get me thinking about chicken and egg stories.

People just assume that media companies are chasing markets, but when the companies are as big as ESPN, they influence what people want out of the NBA, too. If they had wall-to-wall hype trains for OKC and Indy the way they would for Boston-LA, viewership would be higher and no one would be talking about small market “nightmares.” This stuff is almost entirely perception.

It’s got SOME truth to it—of course Boston or LA is a bigger draw, all else equal. But the casual NBA enjoyers that make up a majority of national viewers aren’t necessarily attached to one city. They’re more likely to follow one player if anything, but realistically they keep up with all the big names.

So if teams are playing good, exciting, fun-to-watch basketball… just promote them for it. Novel concept.
