Album omissions that are head scratchers in retrospect?

The 2 that stick to me come from the same year, 1991 (the greatest year in the history of alternative rock).
Soul to Squeeze - RHCP
Yellow Ledbetter - Pearl Jam
It makes more sense to me that YL would get left off of Ten, as it’s a pretty significant departure from the theme of that album (and also essentially a demo recording). The only comparable song would be Release but it’s a completely different vibe.
The way I see it, Soul to Squeeze would have been the perfect end cap on BSSM. Even though they hadn’t fully dove into the melodic songwriting yet and didn’t want to have too many “soft songs”, to me it’s a fitting conclusion to the story told in Under the Bridge. All in all though it is a perfect album.. so it’s hard to say they made a mistake with omitting it.

A lot of these were probably not finished when recorded I guess. You could be Mine was supposed to be on Appetite for Destruction for Guns and Roses. Instead it was on the Terminator 2 soundtrack. I did not look it up, but I am pretty sure that is accurate (I like to not look sometimes for the sake of the topic). GNR also put that one on Use your Illusion as well.

Silver Springs by Fleetwood Mac was left off Rumours.

Jumpin' Jack Flash- The Rolling Stones.
the song was part of the Beggars Banquet sessions , but they left it off. They wanted it to be a single in 68 and shot a promo film for it

Houses of the Holy was left off the album because LZ didn't feel like it matched the other songs and was placed on Physical Graffiti. It is the title track for fs and it does work w/ the album's other songs.

Did not know this.. would love to have been a fly on the wall to witness the total flow state that must’ve occurred during those recording sessions on some of the all time albums

Anyone know why Love Will Tear Us Apart wasn't on an album?
Ages Of You - REM. Left off the EP and Reckoning.

"Hey, Hey What Can I Do" - Led Zeppelin
One of their best songs.

I think it was originally recorded as a Peel Session and released as a single after his death.

Smashing Pumpkins- Drown
It was released as a single in between Gish and Siamese Dream
It’s on the Singles Soundtrack

Pearl Jam - State of Love and Trust
Also on the Singles Soundtrack, not on a Pearl Jam Album
One of my favorite PJ songs
But IMO, being on one of the best Soundtracks ever is all it needed

I understand why. I think the original recording wasn't up to the rest of the songs on Rumours.
Now the version from The Dance is excellent. But I feel the original didn't have the same magic as the live version from The Dance.

They originally said it was too long

a top 30 or 40 Dylan song, maybe top 20. Left off of infidels and only released much later on a compilation. Certainly his best song of the 80s

That version wasn't really "live". It was almost entirely re recorded with overdubs and other extra polishing in the studio.

Spoiler: Almost any "live" performance that has been pre-recorded and then broadcast or pressed later has been heavily edited, altered, mixed and adjusted. Just ask KISS. Hell, these days it is adjusted in real time (see: Melodyne/Autotune)

Traveling Riverside Blues is another LZ example.
Both ended up on later versions of Coda released in the 90s.
I remember hearing them on the radio in the pre-internet days and wondered where the hell they came from since they weren't on the albums.

Dancing In The Flames was the first single from The Weeknd's latest album Hurry Up Tomorrow. It never made it onto the record.
