Dog kennel recommendation

I have a new lab and looking into dog kennels when going from home to the camp in North LA or wherever else. He hates riding in the front for some reason and hes getting too damn big to sit on somebody's lap. I've put him in a cheap wire kennel when going down the road and he seems to like it just fine in the back of the truck. been looking at different kennels and was wondering if its worth spending the money on a Gunner kennel or if somebody has recommendations on others that are worth a look.

I had a Rufftuff (now Ruffland) forever and they're fine. I had to replace the door on my Ruff Tuff twice. I bit the bullet and bought a Gunner for my current dog though and there is a huge difference in the quality there. The Kennel is more solid and is extremely well-made. The tie down bars are great as well. It is heavy though and it is more than twice the price of the Ruff Tuff, so that's your call. I think you would be happy with either but if you want the next best thing to a custom dog box, I'd look at Gunner, Lucky Duck, or Dakota.

Holy frick the accessory prices on those Gunner kennels are twice as much as they should be.

Worth every penny but this is coming from someone who had two deerskins.
Buddy ( Ed Thibodeaux) was eating breakfast one morning in Crowley when a guy came in asking about his dog truck. Guy had a lab running around in the bed of his truck. He told Ed how good his dog was and asked how much he thought he was worth. Ed in his very dry humor told the guy $50. The fella got pissed, Ed said he was worth what a plastic kennel cost.

I got a Gunner Medium. It’s a nice kennel but it’s heavy as shite. I can move it by myself but it’s not enjoyable. For reference it weighs as much as a Yeti 105 empty. It’s also awkward to carry. Too long to fit through doorways if you hold it by the handles. End up having to grab it by the metal bars and put the door against your chest. Not bad with two people though.
Also had a problem with the door not latching right. Gunner has a fix for it, but I drilled holes in the frame and got it working right.
That being said, with the kennel strapped down I feel like my dog would survive a car wreck. Might get thrown around inside the box a little, but she’s not coming out of the kennel and the kennel isn’t going anywhere. It’s expensive but I feel like it’s a good insurance investment.
I know if I saved the $200 or whatever and got something cheaper, and then my dog got hurt, I would never forgive myself.

Just had another thought. It would be riding in the back some of the time, but when I have my 4-wheeler in the bed, I'll need something that can fit in the back seat of my crew cab gmc....I don't think the Gunner would fit. Guess I'll need to break out a tape measure. That may narrow down my choices as well.

I keep mine on a furniture mover when it isn't in my truck

I have cheap plastic crate with metal door and it’s lasted 11 years. So far so good.

I haven't found a portable kennel that will fit in the back seat of a truck. I just put a back seat cover (Pawpy Stuff) in my Tundra and my two german shepherds ride well in it.
I've never had any issues hauling a dog in the bed of a truck with one of the cheaper portable kennels.

I got the gunner as well. With the amount of money i have in the dog and his training; the peace of mind was worth it. I do hate that it prevents my bed cover from closing; but it works. He also is fairly comfortable in there. You would not be able to fit this and an atv in the truck bed tho.
