The Lhsaa recently held a meeting of about 30 basketball coaches to discuss issues with the state of high school basketball. Also some of the assignments Secretaries were also there and some used zoom. Training of refs was discussed they will be getting another raise in January. The shot clock was discussed not a lot in favor of it seems to be too much of an expense. Lee Sanders did say the refs need more training. That goes without saying. One coach did a poll of best refs in the state. He showed it after the meeting. From what I understand this was from playoffs and state tournament games from a variety of coaches. Best Lafayette, BR, Nola, Shreveport, Alexandria. Worst Lake Charles, Leesville,, Monroe. This was second hand info. don’t know how accurate. One coach told me he left halfway thru due to nothing was getting
done just a big gripe session. Who knows what the executive committee will do with this information. Hopefully they won’t let these few people make decisions for all the schools.

For some reason this post reminded me of something from my HS days.

Our girls won the district title for the 1st time in school history. After the game they were cutting down the nets and there was a big celebration.

The boys coach was leaning against the wall near the concession stand, watching from a distance.

Someone said, "Coach, isn't this awesome?? First district title ever!"

His response, and I quote: "You cut down my nets, you pay for them."

This is exactly what is is. The school has to pay for the clocks, and people to operate them/another official.

Nice to see calcasieu parish officiating hasn't changed since my playing days 30yrs ago. They were the worst outside of Terrebonne parish.

According to your cliff notes there were only 2 topics, Better train the refs and the shot clock. Better training refs/umps is something everyone is always for... Then the shot clock would need to be a vote and it will come down to cost/logistics for the smaller schools. If someone could come up with a detailed cost/plan then maybe could get enough votes.

What else are you "hoping" they don't listed to these 30 coaches about ?

And that's the problem. A cost plan will go with something ridiculous like $6,000 to buy and install a shot clock, when what should happen is you go buy the $229 shot clock off Amazon and get your maintenance worker at the school to install it b/c that's his job.

All you need is a student "team manager" or a "statistician". Offer them a Varsity Letter jacket for competition of 2 seasons. Get you 1 freshman every other year & you have 2 kids available for all your games each season.
It's NOT that hard.

Uh no. At every level, an official controls the shot clock. You can't have suzy the high school slut/student manager controlling the shot clock when she's thinking about how long the opposing teams Guards cock is.

They should trial it to 5A vs 5A games only to start… then if it goes well expand it

Def need a shot clock… it’s ridiculous a team running out 3 mins of clock.

Expense? I don’t know about that… every gym has electronics , and can get one of those portable clocks $3-400.

But it’s ok every high school around here with turf baseball and football fields…

Hire another referee to do it. Pay him 75% since no physical work. I bet there are plenty of older guys that would like to be involved, but physically can’t referee, or worried they aren’t experienced enough.. good way to start newer refs as well.

Just a bunch of excuses

Why are you needing to hire a shot clock operator?
Who runs the clock at a high school game? Someone paid or another coach/teacher/volunteer?

You would need a dedicated person to run it, I believe.

Maybe not- not sure how they work tbh

the point remains, where's this crazy fee to add a shot clock to a school?
You buy a shot clock you can afford, and you install it. If you want to spend $5,000 to do that, then go ahead, but it can be done for $500 if you want it to. I'm not going to pretend a school doesn't have that in their budget to use, and if they don't, then they need a new AD and/or Principal.

If you have to pay for another official to run the shot clock, then add $1 to the entry fee if it's that big of a deal to you.

Just a bunch of excuses from morons that have ulterior motives that they can't do this.
