US men’s hockey team wins first world championship since 1933

The US won their first world title since 1933

The women won their world championship a few weeks ago as well.
Besides the big win, my favorite part of the story might be that the Swedes named their arena in Stockholm “Avicii Arena”
Between this and the four nations cup earlier this year, the men are looking really strong for the 2026 Olympics.

I would laugh at the weirdo Swedes but we tore down our historical statues and erected statues to a POS who OD’ed on fentanyl.

The drought was 92 years because this is a second-tier tournament we don’t particularly care about / messes with the NHL postseason and badly needed offseason rest. Better to win but this isn’t exactly hype material

It’s almost always been held at that time.
The countries generally all send pretty serious squads of players who aren’t in the NHL playoffs.

for the juniors, Chipotle offers them free "chipper" for a year if they win gold. Im not sure if they have the same offer for the big boys. If they dont, they fricking should.

Yes, it’s a much bigger deal for the European countries than it is to the U.S. and Canada. Still, it’s not like it’s a complete joke. Crosby (and multiple other stars) were there for Canada.
But obviously any players still alive in the NHL playoffs weren’t there, and some players decide not to go even if their NHL team has been eliminated in order to rest. So it’s not completely “best-on-best” the way 4 Nations was or the way the Olympics will be next year.

We will never have a best on best tournament until the Russians are included in these events. It’s disgusting to think about but these winners all have asterisks.
