Range ball prices…

…at least in the Houston area are getting out of control. $16 for a bucket of balls. Paid $15 at another course a few days ago. I must be in the wrong business as the cost to maintain field and beat up balls can’t be very much esp since most courses are strictly hard arse mats now.
Rant over. Time to be that cheap arse everyone hates walking around collecting up everyone’s leftover balls.

Public ranges suck in big cities. Impossible to maintain that amount of turf so you have to hit off mats. Joining a club is the only answer for outdoor ranges.

Lafayette has the worst ranges for a city/pop of its size. Going off memory the golf academy is just a dirt pit that rarely has grass growing and is $10 per bucket, cash only, and the balls are 20 years old.
The new range is covered overhead with mats and is $12 for a bucket. The balls are so cheap they literally peel apart on your irons. It’s an atrocious display around here.
The muni course has no range and the other course you are not allowed to hit woods.

Guys, it’s time to face the reality that it’s not 2018 anymore. They will sell plenty of buckets in that condition at $16 all weekend every weekend. $16 today is what $8 was in 2018. You’re talking compounded inflation of at least 35-40% over that time coupled with at least 200% higher demand. It’s pointless to complain about this stuff. If you want to hit quality golf balls off of decent turf on a regular basis, you’re probably going to have to join a private club.

Black horse recently went to only members or people playing could get balls. Before they did that, their large bucket was $27. It was outrageous. I live 5 minutes from there, and it was enough to make me go farther away to practice.

Don’t you make like 789k a year and have 0 debt? Why aren’t you going to the range at Players or the Resort course?

GM at my local course says his driving range does $20k a month on the range.

Have a friend who is a member of the Reserve in Aiken. He still pays $28 for a cart. As a member. And private carts aren’t allowed.
Golf is expensive. And hard.

I feel like I have access to a pretty sweet range in Fort Worth. Leonard's driving range has a fantastic setup and is very well maintained. They have like a 300 yard wide line for lots of golfers, and it's 75 yards deep so that they can move the line every day for fresh grass while old grass repairs.
I have heard of two courses having their range balls stolen recently, one was during or right after covid and apparently there was a 6 month backlog to purchase new range balls for the course. And the balls were EXPENSIVE.

You guys should move north. My local golf course is a nice 18 hole course. Annual fee for unlimited golf is $600 and annual range fee is $250. For under $1,000 per season we have unlimited golf and range. Pretty normal for up here.

And a season is what 6 or 7 months long up there?

Roughly mid-March to mid-November. So yeah, 7-8 months.

For that price, might as well play a round of round.

Here in Missouri where i live I frequent 2 ranges. Both pretty nice. one charges 10 for a large and the other 13 for a large. The 13 a pop one has tons of good grass area.

Bayou oaks in NOLA is 17 bucks for a large bucket now and you hit off mats. They do have “launch monitors” but I don’t even use them half the time.
It’s just the new reality of golf unfortunately. 17 dollars for a large bucket and the place stays packed. At least they’ve used the money to improve some areas.
