means than destitute/poverty. However, some fail to realize that living a life of modest means comes with its share of challenges and I don't mean monetary/possessions. It can be tempting to have a false sense of self based upon such and one must work to achieve balance .. something about a rich man and the eye of a needle [gate].
This world has a way of seducing us into all sorts of illusions that do not serve us well. Said another way, so called 'privilege' brings an entirely different set of challenges and those who do not have are pressed to appreciate and vice versa....just saying.

I hate how the Klingon and Khan in some Star Trek movies quote fricking Shakespeare. Like the movie writers try to BS people into thinking they wrote it. fricking hacks.

I think he means middle class, and he’s comparing that to the real poor.

There are plenty of miserable rich people.

Here, I found it:
They call me redneck, white trash and blue collar
But I could change all that if I had a couple million dollars
I keep hearing that money is the root of all evil
And you can't fit a camel through the eye of a needle
I'm sure that's probably true
But it still sounds pretty cool
'Cause it could buy me a boat
It could buy me a truck to pull it
It could buy me a Yeti 110 iced down with some silver bullets
Yeah, and I know what they say, money can't buy everything
Well, maybe so

Yeah. I am a professional/self-employed/ business owner with 25 years experience in my field, and it is amazing what it takes just to be solidly middle class with some retirement and even shitty health insurance for a healthy family of four.
In the welfare state I support (financially, not ideologically or politically), if I made 1/20 of what I gross now I could probably reduce my overall stress level.
And so it goes.

Make as much money as you can but put yourself on a budget that challenges you a little bit.
Use the rest to pay off debt, save and invest.
You'll find that you can live off less and be happy even if you're making 6 figures and wondering if you shouldn't be spending more since ... "by God, you earned it."
None of those things that most baws buy bring any real happiness. New car, new truck, new outdoor toys, clothes, gadgets, wife's hair and nails did, none of it brings happiness.
Happiness is within you and it finds you, you never find it.

I don't think they were trying to BS you. Khan quotes Moby Dick and earlier in the movie they show a copy of It on the Botany Bay. I think they were trying to show you he DID he read it.

Luxury and comfort have rotted our brains and emasculated society.

Great, Its a lot of hard work which would exclude you....
But at least you have something to keep your mind occupied while you knit.
