Because the housing market has priced out a huge percentage of folks under 45.
The comical cost of houses now mixed with the interest rate takes out the average home buyer unless they are married and even then it may not happen

The market is so dumb. There have been multiple houses in my area that sat on the market for a year so they took them off the market and then this spring put them back on for 20% more than last year when it sat on the market for a year. What sense does that make? The realtors have lost their minds

I think this makes it even more important for younger people to get into the housing market as soon as possible. They'll be way ahead of the curve amongst their peers if they do. As older people continue to die off and the housing market gains more supply, they'll be the only ones that can afford to move up in housing size/cost.
If I had a kid about to graduate college, I'd tell them to buy a condo or townhome in a less desirable area that has upside/gentrification coming as soon as they possibly can. Use PMI, etc., do whatever you can. You won't want to buy a home in those places once married with kids.

If we didn't have a small but meaningful population of people that the rest of us were fleeing from because they are awful to live around, and millions of people flooding in across an undefended border, the prices wouldn't have exploded so much considering how much housing we build.
Having millions of people that no one wants to live even 5 miles from is a huge hindrance.
