If Pres Tate leaves I have no doubt a big part of his reason for leaving is he's sick and tired of having to deal with Gov Jeff Landry.
Landry hates LSU and he's made it clear he wants to bring down LSU and build up USL which is his alma mater.

The thought of Jeff Landry selecting Tate's successor is just awful. Its hard enough attracting talented staff and faculty to the state with him just serving as governor, but his takes it up several notches...

At the time of Tate's hire, he did not seem like a good fit at LSU and the only reason why was some type of writings about STEM education that bordered on DEI policies or something to that effect.
But now Tate seems to be a good ambassador for LSU and has done fine job.

This is a compromise. The Good Ol Boys (the gov and LA republicans) have been hammering on him since Landry swore in last year. They have forced out some of Tate's allies.
