If you have a child looking for a college major and career path, think about mining

I know there's a lot of uncertainty with AI and what jobs will be there for the younger generation but the number of college graduations with mining engineering degrees have fallen off a cliff not only in the US but in Canada and Australia and with half of current engineers reaching retirement age over the next decade, the country and the Western world need new grads.
If you've got a kid that's interested, schools will go a long way to accommodate them.

At the university level, the United States’ 14 mining schools have collectively graduated roughly 185 to 200 mining engineers per year, into an annual demand of 400 to 500, over the last few years, said Stephen Enders, head of the mining engineering department at the Colorado School of Mines.
“Professionally, we just don’t have the student numbers in our mining-related university programs to meet the demand of the current needs for the industry,” he said.

Colorado School of Mines is one of the best colleges campuses / college towns in the country and has one of the best engineering programs to go with it. I'd highly recommend it to anybody considering a degree in engineering.

Mine 16 tons, what do you get?

Sounds like a good way to get another day older and deeper in debt.

Yeah, but if you're raised in a canebrake by an old mama lion, what the hell else are you likely to be successful at?

I worked in Golden, had a beautiful view from my office.
The Coors plant wasn't as pristine as the TV commercials made it out to be though and it smelled like french fries.

My son loves Minecraft so this'll be right up his alley. Thanks.

Overheard a baw at the boat ramp tell another baw with a son about to go to college, that a diesel mechanic could write his own ticket.

unless they’ve succumbed to full on wokeness that’s a pretty tough school

Just read a story about scientists turning lead into gold. Not a good sign for the miners.

Out of curiosity, what does mining even pay?

Entry level mining engineering jobs should probably expect around $80k on average.

Rio Tinto starts engineers out in pay band H or I. That is between $95 - $110 year.
Of course, Rio is laying off right now. Two senior engineers I worked with were laid off 3 weeks ago.
All 4 junior Engineers I saw get hired are still there though.

Considering its mountains, deserts, and rich deposits, California should have a couple of mining schools, but they think digging is gross and beneath them and offends the Earth Mother.
