NFL Owners Set to Vote on Major Change to Playoff Seeding

Are you for or against this?

In Minneapolis next week, NFL owners will have a chance to make the biggest change to postseason seeding in decades—with the Lions’ proposal to reconfigure the system listed as Bylaw Proposal No. 4 on the docket to be voted on.
Detroit’s proposal would be for the four division champions and three wild cards in each conference to make the playoffs. Those seven teams would then be seeded strictly by record, rather than assigning the top seeds to the division winners (which is how it’s been done since the merger), with the wild cards to follow. If teams have the same record, being a division champion would be the first tiebreaker—regardless of head-to-head record.
A change in Detroit’s proposal from March is for the teams then to be reseeded after the first round. So, in this case, the No. 1 seed would play the lowest-remaining seed in the conference, rather than automatically facing the winner of the No. 4 vs. No. 5 matchup, with the other two remaining teams playing in the other divisional round game.

The “provides excitement and competition” portion is key for the NFL, which has become increasingly concerned about teams resting players in Weeks 17 and 18 in preparation for the playoffs, with seeding locked up or at least narrowed down. The NFL analytics team showed owners a slide at the March meetings that explained how an “open seeding” system, like the one Detroit proposed, would make late games more relevant.
From that slide …
• In the current system, the Houston Texans went into Week 18 locked into the fourth seed. In the adjusted system, seed Nos. 4, 5, 6 or 7 would’ve been possibilities at that point.
• The Los Angeles Rams went into Week 18 knowing they’d be Nos. 3 or 4 in the NFC. In the adjusted system, they could’ve been Nos. 4, 5, 6 or 7.
• The Philadelphia Eagles went into Week 18 set as the No. 2 seed. In the adjusted system, they could’ve fallen to No. 3 with a loss.

Four division champs, no wild cards

The Lions are stupid for doing this because I think the whole division is going to finish like 9-8 this year, so the division winner will be punished.

I get why they do them, but divisions are kind of bullshite. Look at the NL west this year in baseball, they get to play extra games against the Rockies who aren’t a real professional baseball team, and then the wild card goes to the non division winners with the best records.
It probably mostly evens out in all sports, but it is kind of bullshite to reward worse teams because of who is in their geography

frick yes. Winning a division gets you in but shouldn’t constitute a higher seed/homefield or hosting.
The idiots who just scream well you should’ve won your division are completely void of rational thought. In no world should a team who goes 12/5 or 13/4 have to travel to an 8/9 or 9/8 team from a shitty division.

Why even have divisions anymore?

I am sure I am in the minority, and even though the Saints have been on the shite end of the stick a few times, I do not mind the division winners getting the auto home game. But I have a feeling the league may put serious consideration into this for the reasons cited in OP. Texans & Rams were able to rest up before the playoffs, but with new proposal they could not do that and risk a road game.
I like the 2nd part of the proposal about reseeding after the 1st round.
I also wish they would either go back to 6 teams with 2 teams getting a bye, or just go to 8 with no bye weeks

Yea the one bye is stupid. I’m sure it was done like that to try and have teams play the last week to try and secure the top seed

NFL already reseeds after each round. The only change here from the current set up is division winners would no longer be an auto 1st round host.

The Lions have a couple of good years after sucking for 60 and now they want to run shite.

Am I smoking crack? I could have sworn the NFL already reseeds

NFL has always reseeded. It’s why the NFC 1 seed played the 6 seed and the AFC 1 seed played the 4 seed last season.

I don’t really have strong feelings either way. Guessing it would increase the competitiveness of the last couple weeks of the season since there will be more to play for, but could also end up resulting in teams throwing in for a tank a lot sooner, but that already kind of happens.
Go back to 2 teams with a bye and 6 teams while we’re at it

That was exactly my first thought.
It's like some new money bozo getting in to an old country club and immediately wanting to change the way things have been run for 60 years

Why do we keep changing shite? And the changes seem to keep getting more significant.
Put everything with the NFL back to what it was in the 80s-90s as far as rules are concerned. The Saints possibly never win their Super Bowl with today's rules, and Jim Burt would have probably been suspended for the hit he put on Montana in the '85 playoffs.

I like the re-seeding after the first round.
I'm ambivalent about the proposal TBH. Winning your division should mean something.

This.
A 4-team division is stupid. Winning a division in the NFL means you are better than exactly 3 of the other 31 teams in the league (9.7%).
Winning the NFC South is like winning the Special Olympics. You may win, but you are still retarded.

While it’s not the “fairest” system, it promotes league parity and shortens the ladder for teams to rebuild and make the playoff, and that’s a huge reason why the NFL became and still is the massive product that it is and doesn’t go through market level issues that the MLB/NBA go through (in tandem with the system for controlling player movement)
