Who are the top rated builders ???
Posted on 5/16/25 at 11:02 am to Ncook
How big?
There are countless options for companies and people across louisiana who can build you an excellent aluminum flat boat from 12 feet to 200 feet. Some of them will build a 12' boat on one side of the yard and a 120' boat on the other side. There are hundreds of choices.

Uncle Js and St. Andrew's are top notch.
Our own Captain J built mine but not sure if he is still in the business. He will respond to this thread I would imagine.

Commercial is pegged at over 18’ now and many are getting out due to that uscg mandate. Henderson La used to have a ton of builders but many stopped due to the new requirements. List above is solid but you’re going to get flotation like it or not.

What are the new requirements?

My prodigy has been a great boat to me for the last 8 years, but they aren’t local. If looking for local, I’d go with uncle J. If you don’t mind driving out of state for it, I’d check out prodigy.

Gator Trax in Springfield. Fully customized boats. Different models offered as a starting point and sky is the limit with design. Plenty of videos on YouTube of builds.

Flotation which requires either seats or sides taking up space.

Damn, that sucks and is some stupid bs. That is for all boats or just over a certain size?

It's always been required for any boat under 20'
Most get around it by issuing a state hull number. LA use to actually sell most of the builders mentioned state issued hull numbers, this would be the same type hull number you would end up getting with a home made boat. It was common to have a hull built by a builder with a builder code assigned to them, but the hull number on your hull would start with LAZ
The big change is on the mudboat and airboat hulls. Most all builders, myself included, had exemption letters that allowed for thr surface drive hulls to be built without foam. Same thing for airboat hulls. The coast guard has done away with that, now requiring level flotation equipments for sub 20' mudboats and basic for airboats.

What is considered a mud boat? A true tunnel hull mud boat or just anything with a surface drive?
