Let's talk about the Saints signing Hunter Dekkers to a contract after his workout?

Hunter Dekkers was a 4 Star Recruit and the Iowa State QB that followed Purdy. He had a good year at Iowa, 3000 yards, 19TDs, 66% completion

...and then it was discovered that he bet $15 dollars for Iowa State to win a game when he was a Freshman not playing.

He was dismissed and banned by the NCAA

He went JUCO and had a good year in JUCO (3800, 32TDs, 64%)

6'2", 212.

He went to Saints rookie minicamp tryouts...and he's one of the very few players that the Saints signed afterwards to an actual camp contract.

I find this incredibly interesting. Now, obviously, its likely he's a camp arm and that's it. But to me this is a story to watch.

would be nice to stash him on PS for a year and maybe he takes over a roster spot next year. has a great build to him.

According to ESPN, Dekkers was one of 35 people at Iowa and Iowa State who faced criminal charges or loss of eligibility due to sports betting. Dekker went on to plead guilty to a lesser charge of underage gambling.

Evidence in the investigation uncovered that Dekkers made 366 bets on a DraftKings account that belonged to his mother over three years.

“I wasn’t throwing games, I wasn’t shaving points, and I would never do that,” Dekkers told ESPN in March. “There was never any intent behind any of these bets. We weren’t trying to make money. We were just treating it like a video game, in a sense.”

The kind of guy you take a lottery ticket on. Anyone having much of any expectations on this guy would be far to much. At the very least he's a guy you bring to camp as an arm and don't even think about what could be in the future. If he impresses and shows promis you deal with it then.

Until one hits, we are in the business of developing QBs. I see 0 reason to keep developing Haener, so Dekkers makes sense.

He can sling it, reminds me a little of hefty lefty (RIP). At worst a great camp arm, who knows?

Very dumb, but as long as he learned his lesson and doesn't do it as a pro.

Its a longshot anyway that he even makes it out of camp (or, to camp).

But he is certainly an interesting case

Iowa State highlights. Looks like he has a rifle arm from these, and no fear (Favre-like, throwing into coverage) for better or worse.
(Sorry, couldn't figure out link.)

So conveniently left out his 14 interceptions?

So did he play at Iowa State or Iowa?

Hopefully he can take Jake Haener’s spot as our QB3 and eventually develop into something even more than that.

he is a left with a southpaw delivery, a rocket for an arm, and runs a 4.56. 4 star in college so clearly has potential. i think he could have a serious shot at a roster spot.

That’s not actually a big number of bets at all. It says it’s over 3 years. Ex) if you’re live betting say a basketball game that’s back and forth, you can place a bunch of little bets on each team as they swing from + money to - money, and increase your odds of winning both sides of the bet, but that may add up to 6,8,10 total bets…
