It was a different world dude. China wasn't in the WTO as a "developing nation." It hadn't sucked away all our manufacturing and industrial base. If Reagan could have looked into the future, it would have been a very different speech.

1. Trump's goal is to impose tariffs for a short period, long enough to renegotiate trade deals.

2. Haven't foreign countries already impose tariffs and restrictions on US exports before Trump came into office?

This isn't the gotcha you think it is.

Right now we couldn't fight a war against China without stuff made in China. When tariff opponents have a reasonable plan to address that problem, and there are some plans that involve slashing the size and scope of govt, then they might have a point about tariffs.

Lol. Trump is comical. Killing babies after birth?!

Lol. Are you watching it? Trump just lies and exaggerates

You are insane. Trump just rambles with lie after lie. and does not even answer the questikn

Exactly. Let’s allow everyone “protect” themselves with bazookas, grenades, and what the heck, maybe a cruise missile. The founding fathers did not fathom personal machine guns or semiautomatic guns, high capacity guns, etc. Armies fought with muskets which fired a few times per minute.

Pro-lifers are actually just pro-birthers. The majority of abortions are minorities. Most pro-birthers dont give a crap about minorities once they are born. But hey, an added benefit to banning abortions will be many more future Democrats. Yay!

They follow Dictator Trump and dont care about any reasonable discussion on actual issues and principles, oh, nor any reasonable discussion with facts and science.

Classy. Trump is a loser and wannabe dictator.

As expected from the most embarassing, worst President in our history. We are a laughing stock around the world after what happened at the Capitol. Sore loser and just because he says the same vote fraud lies over and over again, it does not make them true. It is the same thing dictators have used since Hitler. Keep saying a lie and the people believe it. All the election lawsuits have been thrown out by Republican and Democratic judges. Comical.

IRCA Ronald Reagan is the OG amnesty globohomo responsible for everything wrong in America in 2025. Retard Republicans thought they were getting cheap labor, and Democrats were smart enough to know they were getting a bigger minority voting base they’d eventually put next to blacks by making them dependent on government for life and opening the floodgate for illegals.

And here we are.

I don’t know about this. But I was walking around Wally World a few days ago and there were a whole lot of Made in the USA labels minus electronics. Clothes were from Thailand. Air conditioners from Vietnam.

Now how much of the made in the USA or other countries was made here or there, but dependent on Chinese sub components or raw materials is another argument.

Chinas economy was 191 billion.

Why stop at Reagan, what did Caesar have to say about it, or Gengis Khan.

FYI, everything should come with context, so let's provide some here. this speech is from President Reagan's Radio Address to the Nation on Free and Fair Trade from Camp David, Maryland - April 25, 1987. (That's why the casual attire and overt reading in delivering it.)

Context:
On March 31, 1987, President Reagan imposed 100% tariffs on $300 million worth of Japanese electronics, specifically color TVs, computers, and power tools. The action was in retaliation for Japan failing to honor a 1986 agreement to allow more American semiconductor products into their market and in response to Japanese chip dumping.

Reagan's radio address clarified his underlying premise -- “We want fair trade, but we also want free trade. Protectionism is destructionism. It costs jobs.” His was a pro-free-market position, but with trade enforcement. He used targeted tariffs as leverage. As in his radio address, he framed his tariffs as enforcement of "fair trade" rules, not protectionism.

Trump's approach may be a little different, but not that much.

Fun fact time! Reagan was also vehemently opposed to US citizens owning or having access to semi-automatic rifles.

Reagan did some good things, but like with literally everyone else on this earth, the more I learned about him the less I liked him.

I'll admit it, I was concerned at the outset but I didn't understand it as well as I do now.

Reagan's not wrong but Trump is using them as a reset and not as a long term solution. Make no mistake, this reset is needed as we have been getting screwed.

It's not as huge a reset probably but we needed it badly. Plus we were able to get China to reset without being accused of making it all about them. More evidence of Trump's art of deal making in parallel dimensions.

Reagan gave amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants and helped set the precedent that our government would look the other way if foreigners violated our sovereignty. Illegal dealings with the Contras in Nicaragua imported crack cocaine to this country and got millions of people addicted. He also appointed easy money fanatic Greenspan to the Fed. He is just as much to blame as any other politician in the last 50 years for the decline in our civilization. The Gipper was an idealist, but he wasn’t right about everything.
