Hey Guys,

I lurk and read this board a lot but rarely post. I've been saving my dimes and come to you for direction. Three years ago yall gave great information on a new boat and now I'm in the market for a rifle.

I'm considering a .338 Win Mag because:
1.) I want to go on a big game hunt
b.) I've been shooting a .270 exclusively at white tails for years
%.) I want one

Trying to take the leap, talk me into it.

“I want one” is the best reason for getting one. No need to talk you any further along.

I want one is literally the only reason to get a 338 Win Mag. It's not needed in nearly any scenario.

A model 70 alaskan is what you need.

The recoil isn't bad. It doesn't destroy deer as badly as a .270. It's really easy to handload. It's basically just a better. 30-06. Makes you giggle a little bit when when you start having chunk trails instead of blood trails. One rifle for every big game animal in the hemisphere. Available in some cool rifles.

Have a Tikka in .338 win mag, it likes heavier bullets, 1.5” groups at 200 with a 250 grain projectile

Folded him at 125 yards

Nuh uh. Its great for stunting on the creedmoor bois at the range.

When they hit the plate it goes ding. When you hit the plate it goes FWABANNGGGGGGGGG and breaks off after the 2nd or 3rd hit.

Also, people figure you must be the baddest SOB on earth to be able to hit anything with that cannon more than once, because they're too scared to shoot it and figure out that the recoil isn't bad at all.

Only other thing to consider is a .338 Lapua Mag. I haven't done a ton of research, but think you are shooting the same bullet faster. And faster sometimes seems more better.

This is prettymuch the case with anything besides a 308. Want is plenty justification.

that's silly, what does "need" have to do with it?

If you dont constrain yourself to "normal" rifles and dont mind lugging around an 18 pound behemoth with a 30" barrel that burns 130 grains of powder per pull, yea that's a solid choice

338 norma is what id go for since its built for 300 gr bullets, because the lapua only gets you a 1.5 mile rifle and the norma gets you a 1.6 mile rifle.

.338 win mag is the perfect do anything caliber if Africa is off the table. Its about the limit of horsepower you can stuff in a reasonably light hunting rifle and still have civilized recoil. .375 h&h is the perfect do anything if africa is on the table, but those rifles usually weigh 10 pounds or more, and they need to. A light .375 is pretty damned rough.

more deader...way over there

it was said before, the Model 70 Alaskan is the answer. Pre-'64 Style controlled round feed with claw extractor.

Yes!

Bigger, faster, louder, more explosions! 200 times the fun for only 2 times the cost!

Look at the .33 xc as well.
Designed for "extreme long range"

.33 xc sends a 300gr bullet at 3200fps

ETA: Downside to reloading the .33xc is that you need a 50 bmg press.

These are the answers I'm looking for!

I mostly hunt here in South Louisiana, but planning on trips to Montana and Alaska within the next five years. A local gun smith is a good friend who knows my $ range and that I would do some deerstand hunting. He's steering me towards a Savage Bear Hunter with a 23" barrel or a Ruger Hawkeye Alaskan with a 20" barrel.

The longest shot I'm currently comfortable with is in the 400yd range so I don't see the need for a longer barrel.

Now on to optics!

I have a Remington Model 700 CDL in .264 Win Mag. That’s a fun caliber that will handle N. American game

I’ve bought two for Elk and or Moose trips I’ll likely never take. Got a Weatherby Mk V in .300 Weatherby Mag and traded a scope for a Sako Finnbear in .338 Win Mag. I’d part with the Weatherby if you’re interested. Look up the ballistics on both. Pretty flat shooting calibers.

Ammo is scarce and expensive on the .300 Wby but I’ve got about 5-6 boxes of ammo I’ll include with it. Got a Zeiss Conquest 3.5-10x50 on the Wby. Would sell with or without scope.

Don’t know any about the .274 but I’m willing to learn. What scope are you using and what range are you comfortable with?
