What does the OT think of medians? Do we prefer medians or just a long turning lane?

Context. We just got medians all down the main road in my community. It was previously just one long, turning lane and it’s a very busy road. Many people are really having issues adjusting as if they’ve never seen or used a median before. For example, people can’t comprehend that you have to go a little bit out of your way and do a U-turn to get where you are going so instead, they will make some ridiculous cut through multiple lanes of traffic.

Pro medians, but can’t think of a time I’ve seen them added afterwards.

People who can’t figure out medians should have their license revoked.

We allow way too many stupid people to operate vehicles.

same with folks who can't figure out or simply ignore this one. I see people making either u-turns or left turns in these crossovers every day on Airline.

FM 1488 is a nightmare with or without medians.

Medians are what idiot drivers deserve. If they can’t be trusted to make common sense left turns and are causing accidents they obviously need medians. It’s like adding bumpers to the bowling lane. Making changes for the lowest common denominator, idiots.

Medians are on all the busy roads in Tyler. I was skeptical at first but it does seem to get you on your way a lot quicker if you’re coming from a side street rather than sitting at a stop sign waiting forever to be able to cross several lanes of traffic.

Medians look better but I think a turning lane moves traffic better.

Turning lane multiplies accidents, and is fugly from an aesthetic perspective if you care about that sort of thing.

North Carolina is the state of medians... in Raleigh and Charlotte, pretty much every major road has one. Works pretty well there.

I think medians look a lot nicer than suicide lanes, assuming they’re maintained.

Whether they’re better for traffic depends on the road. For low-volume roads, they can be much more aesthetically pleasing and don’t have much impact* on driving anyway. For really high-volume roads, they are helpful because the controlled access keeps people from trying to make stupid left turns. In-between is where they can make things worse.

*One thing that drives me crazy is on roads with stop signs on the cross streets and no turning lanes. People turning left onto the main road from cross streets should either wait until it’s clear both ways or, worst case, pull straight into the crossover. Instead, people like to pull into the crossover diagonally and block turning vehicles on the main road.

Agreed.

Ellick's road design is bananas and there are wrecks constantly.

Especially on a road like 28E past Super 1. In the middle of a turn lane as cars fly by you both directions going 60 mph. frick that.

Depends on amount of traffic, functional classification of roadway and access points.

This is why I like them. Drivers are getting worse and worse.

This is actually the road I was referring to. It’s helped some stretches but it’s also made some stretches worse mainly due to idiots not knowing how to use them properly or refusing to go slightly out of their way to pull a u turn.
