What happened to garage bands?

That thread got me remembering. Grew up in the 70s and 80s. I remember lots of teenagers having garage bands and playing at even really small bars. The classifieds always had ads for people looking to join one or looking for a particular instrument.
I don’t see that today. Do kids today still form garage bands as much as before? Anyone who’s been around live music have a theory if they don’t anymore?
Damn. Just realized that was around 45-50 years ago. frick.

Now it’s marauding bands formed in Magnet Schools for the purposes of wilding and mayhem.

My guess is that kids these days are probably recording their part/instrument and combining it all digitally after sharing with “band mates” instead of gathering to play in person in a garage.

Soundcloud rappers are the new garage bands

prob due to the overall death of mainstream rock bands. Everything is some spinoff of hip hop now a days.

The attention span of 4-5 musicians back then, getting together for practice, actually practicing, getting frustrated, practicing more, getting the feeling for what it’s like to sound tight, enjoying that experience and seeing each other again,….. for more practice…
We had that instead of iPhones.

Sort of. Rock Band Leagues (like the one in Birmingham) and the sort are replacing them. Instead of forming a band with your neighborhood buds, you get paired with other young musicians with similar interests and skill levels. Then a teacher helps facilitate their development and performance.
It's a good concept because it helps more kids get involved and learn how to play in a band. But you definitely lose out on that organic "garage band" experience.
I have seen a few teenager "garage band" types on Tik Tok doing cool stuff. But it seems like they have wealthy parents backing them to get them exposure.

They have music fest with nothing but DJs today...

Ironically it was the home recording app GarageBand that essentially killed garage bands.
I think like all things it's coming back though.

No kids learn to play an instrument because there are too many other distractions
ETA: there are music programs for rich kids but rich people don’t make good music because good music comes from a place of pain (except for gram parsons)

There’s plenty of local bands playing every weekend at Mid City Ballroom. Chelsea’s hosts the Monthly Harmonic Stew which features exclusively local bands of every genre and variety. A lot of these kids start off in those school of rock bands as teenagers and then form their own projects in college.
In Baton Rouge, most local bands are either shoegaze, yacht rock, hardcore, or sludge metal influenced. There’s very little one would recognize as generic “rock n roll”.

Technology, most music being consumed from digital sources and DJs. As for modern day rock, pop nd country music they all, stick to a very similar chord progression with little harmonic creativity.

quote:In larger cities, there's an outlet for it called School of Rock. It's a franchise. Kids starting as early as age 7, they stop when they graduate high school. They learn in a safe environment, play as a group, and perform at bars and music venues. They get the rock experience in a sanitized manner.
What happened to garage bands?
We did that for my son, (sent to SOR) and he's in college now, and my daughter, now 2 years out of college, but the media room above the garage is a music studio filled with guitars, bass guitars, keyboards, drum set, mixer board, recorder, mics, stands, cables, amps, speakers, launcher, lots of guitar and bass pedals, and of course, cool lights, a projector, and a PlayStation.
They bring their friends over and play upstairs, but the room is densely insulated and the door going into the room is solid wood. Unless they crank up the bass, we never hear them playing.
My daughter plays guitar, flute and piano. My son plays guitar, bass guitar, drums, trumpet and saxophone, as well as sings and writes music. He actually has real talent and has a five octave singing range, and could play professionally with the right group of players, but is studying aerodynamics and mechanical engineering. What he does after college is his business. I just want him to have that degree in his hip pocket if he decides to chase after a musical career.

They exist. I think what has happened is you don't live in that space.
Local talent shows still exist. Go to one. Then you can find out that they perform at local restaurants, bars, and events pretty regularly.
Some schools have multiple band programs, i.e. marching band, orchestra, drumline, jazz, ensemble, even rock. I saw a kid play 7 instruments just the other night.

Happy birthday today to Brahms and Tchaikovsky!
Also the “birthday” of Beethoven’s 9th.
Nothing else comes close.
