He is pretty young and conservative as I recall. Around age 60 I think? And with the huge influx of liberal and Jesuit influenced cardinals, I think this would be a surprising choice. Unless I am confused in my memory of this man.

As someone who isn’t Catholic, the political maneuvering to become the next Pope seems a bit strange to me. You would think since the Pope is the Vicar of Christ, he would choose his own successor in a will of some sort that’s revealed after his death. I guess modern media coverage changes the lens in which we view everything today compared to the past. No one saw the politics in the 1700s Just curious is this how a Pope was always selected?
