Despite good intentions, this appears to be an egregious violation of 1st amendment, no?

I thought that was how they found new priests. This will really hurt recruitment.

Washington governor is supposedly “Catholic”
Just goes to show why you can ignore any research poll that’s says “X % of Catholics believe Y”
Church has to start excommunicating these politicians immediately. Pick a side.

Excommunicate the politicians but keep the child predators protected. Y'all Catholics sure have some weird beliefs.

I have no problem with this, but the result will just be people not confessing this at all.

Slippery slope.
How about murder?
What about theft?
What about not paying taxes?

Dude STFU. You don't know who I vote for. Just because I don't like trump and you're an idiot you think I vote for Dems. Y'all's brains are too fricking small to be able to understand anything else. It's very common amongst the cult and dumbasses like you.
You wanting to protect child predators isn't a shock.

Obviously I’m not Catholic, but Priest’s aren’t mandated to report things like this already? So someone could come in to confession, confess of molesting children, raping women/children, murder etc… and the Priest just tells them to say a few Hail Mary’s and go ‘bout their business?? JFC
I’d think Jesus would be flipping tables in most churches today.

It’s so suspect when people overcompensate as hard as you are in this thread. Gives big time “homophobic preacher leaves his wife for another man” vibes

What’s the correct process they follow now when a parishioner confesses to such crimes?

Not a religious person but wouldn’t we also want to extend this to doctors and lawyers and other privileged professions?
ETA: what’s the justification for stopping it just at religious confession?

What's suspect, but not surprising, is a bunch of Catholics wanting to keep protecting child predators.
But hey, you do you man and continue to deflect.

I am mandated to report even suspicions of abuse/neglect etc…I don’t even have to have full knowledge of a crime/abuse/neglect - just suspicion of something - and I have to report it.
A priest isn’t? I’m surprised really.

I don’t know about lawyers, but MDs, Nurses, teachers, etc… are also mandated to report.

In Louisiana law, abuse talked about in confession is exempt from the mandatory reporter protocol but in general priests are not allowed to report anything to police from a confessional
