CLM's First Class, 4 Years Later...

For all of the rankings and star ratings, you really can't tell how good a class or a player is on signing day. They say that you can only truly tell how good the class is 4 years down the road. Looking at LSU's 2005 class, it's interesting that the 3 Star players have arguably had a greater impact on this team than the 4-5 star players. Granted, this was an odd class because of the way Saban left the program and CLM had to scramble to sign players.
Ryan Perrilloux QB - 5 Stars - Dismissed
Ricky Jean-Francois DE 4 Stars - Starter (Early Entry)
Rahim Alem DE 4 Stars - Starter
Darry Beckwith LB 4 Stars - Starter
Chris Hawkins DB 4 Stars - Starter (CB)
R.J. Jackson ATH 4 Stars - 3rd String, SE
Steven Korte 4 Stars - Transfer to USM
Antonio Robinson RB 4 Stars - Transfer to NSU
Ciron Black OL 3 Stars - Starter
Brandon LaFell WR 3 Stars - Starter
Kyle Anderson TE 3 Stars - Dismissed
Lyle Hitt DT 3 Stars - Starter (OL)
Trindon Holliday ATH 3 Stars - Starter (ST)

Wish they would use Trindon Holliday more..That guy is always one step away from making a huge play...

That was going to be a very small class even if Saban stayed due to the 85 cap. Saban was targeting about 15 players before he left, the same as Miles ended up signing.
That's actually a pretty good percentage of starters and contributors in that group.

I agree that TH needs the ball more, but in order to be successful with that they need to run plays away from him sometimes. over 95% of the time when TH is on the field he gets the ball...can't fool an SEC defense that way!

I thought Korte was going to be a player at LSU.

That class had/has a lot of talent to be such a small class. If RP had been half the trouble, that class would be awesome.

Even though RP was dismissed and hurt LSU this year, LSU doesn't win the SECC last year w/o him. Anytime you get over 50% of your class as big contributers, its very good. That was a strong class despite the small nos.

Looks like, in one year, LaFell went from the 3rd or 4th most probable to succeed in the NFL, to the most probable. Things change quickly.
End of last year I would have thought RP, RJF, then Beckwith or Hawkins.
Next year, Alem or Black may shine, but I think, barring injury, Lafell will be the highest draft pick from this class. Any of next years juniors approach Lafell's potential?

Maybe Chad Jones if he had a breakout year under Chavis. He's the type that could go to the combine and make a big move, but he would need some production on the field as well to move into the first half of the 1st round as a junior.

Roger that. Subsequent years average out well also.

The class that I'm a bit concerned about is 2006 - we've had an awful lot of attrition from that class already. One of the reasons I think Miles has burned so many redshirts from the 2007 and 2008 classes for what seems like minimal playing time; he knows these guys are going to hit the field early due to the lack of quality upperclassmen in that 2006 class.
ETA: by my count we've lost half that class already - they should be seniors or RS juniors in 2009.

A few guys decommited when Saban left. (I want to say three or four HS players). I'm pretty sure T. Holliday was a grey shirt from the year before. CLM landed RP, RJF, R.J. Jackson and LaFell.
That was a number crunched year.

That would be nice. I'm hopeful to see a NICE defensive turnaround next year.

That is a pretty solid percentage of starters/major contributors. I think it also shows the craziness of the star ratings.
ETA: I think it shows that Miles and staff can develop kids into damn, strong players.

Ciron Black OL 3 Stars - Starter
I remember asking a coaching friend of mine about Ciron. I said that he was a 3 star ranked kid. He said, "Whoever ranked him 3, never saw him play." He was wrong on one thing. He said, "He will Red-Shirt his first year and be a backup as a RSF."
Ciron started as a RSF. He also said that Ciron would be playing on Sundays.
