New research published by Pepperdine University is attempting to settle the debate over whether boosting California’s minimum wage for fast-food workers to $20 an hour has led to job losses.
The study, released on April 1 to coincide with the one-year anniversary of AB 1228, cites recent data from the California Employment Development Department that shows a decline of over 23,100 jobs. At the same time, fast-food employment grew by 0.8% nationwide, researchers said.
“This new data should be a wake-up call for policymakers,” said Christopher Thornberg, founding partner at Beacon Economics, a private research group that partnered with Pepperdine’s School of Public Policy on the study. “The employment losses in California’s fast-food industry are now evident, and they confirm what many had warned about: Drastic wage hikes create real economic consequences, especially for entry-level workers.”

Fast food jobs were generally taken by short term employees such as high school students and such but with the higher wage there’s probably more competition from long term employees and the the short term employees have lost their place. Just a hunch.

There were 2 choices, cut back on workers or raise the prices….they chose to implement technology and cut back on workers.
These idiots thought companies and franchisees were just going to take a hit to their profit margins

you should overcome your hunch. because the precursor to it is not just wrong, but functionally opposite to your claim

Yes because they are told that every business owner is just a greedy selfish bastard raking in millions. All corporations only care about their billions in profits.

Yep. But the CEOs get a huge bonus when this happens while the workers get nothing but minimum wages. Imagine that.

Do the robots know the In-N-Out secret menu tho?

Did they really need a peer-reviewed study done by a university to realize this? Everyone knew this would happen before they signed it into law.
It won't be. Cali lawmakers do not live in anything close to reality.

Communism fails because government doesn’t know how to successfully operate a private business, but still believes they should control the operation of it. Free enterprise isn’t free in a communist society.

Sounds like a great reason to be a CEO. Imagine that?

Great thing about California is all the mom and pop places, from coffee shops to burgers. Limiting expansion of McDonalds and fast food is actually good thing for overall health of Californians.

How could we have predicted this?

quote:A couple decades ago, sure. When the 20/hr started the older "career" fast food worker had already been a thing. That's one of the reason why the idiots came up with $20/hr. They were crying that less wasn't a living wage. You're trying to excuse this joke of a minimum wage hike.
