How is it reciprocating tariffs when they already had high tariffs on imports from up that Trump matched?

Indeed. The EU is a bigger trading group than the US. It's not quite as cut and dry.

How high were they previously? Don't give me a number you can't explain from the Whitehouse made up board ...I mean what are their tarrifs levels?

WTO had their tarrifs levels at 4.8% on us goods in the EU.

Different products had different levels in different countries. Either had a tariff and a VAT that made American made things higher, while they were smart in demanding food products not have all the chemicals in them. Yesterday chains had roughly 60% tariff on American made products and they even picked on the Canadian cousin. You tried to paint all tariffs as an equal amount but ironically that’s what Trump probably is doing but with equal amounts being 0. Why are you against having real free trade agreements with any country?

There has been a long battle with Eu.

This is just one of the many.

quote:

2005 Retaliation over the Byrd Amendment:

Context: The Continued Dumping and Subsidy Offset Act of 2000, known as the Byrd Amendment, allowed the U.S. to distribute anti-dumping duties collected from foreign firms to domestic companies affected by dumping.

EU Response: The WTO deemed this practice illegal, and in response, the EU imposed retaliatory tariffs of 15% on selected U.S. goods, including paper products, textiles, and machinery, starting May 1, 2005.

So we were trying to stop dumping and the EU got mad and tariffed us. The diff here is the EU retaliated, not reciprocated.

2008 Dispute over Information Technology Products:

Context: The U.S. filed a case with the WTO in May 2008, challenging the EU's imposition of duties on certain technology products that were supposed to be duty-free under the Information Technology Agreement (ITA).?
United States Trade Representative

EU Tariffs: The EU had applied tariffs to products such as cable and satellite boxes that can access the internet, flat-panel computer monitors, and certain computer printers that can also scan, fax, and/or copy.

I mean we can keep thinking EU has always been some good friend.

They haven't.

1989 Beef Hormone Dispute:

Context: In 1989, the EU implemented a ban on the importation of meat treated with growth-promoting hormones, citing health concerns.

U.S. Response: The United States contested this ban, arguing it lacked scientific justification and violated international trade agreements.

EU Tariffs: After the World Trade Organization (WTO) ruled in favor of the U.S., the EU maintained its ban.

Including VAT in the current discussions is a red herring. VAT is levied on almost all goods including domestically produced goods. It is a sales tax like most states charge in the US.

If we tether, in part, any tariff deal to include VAT then we effectively kill any attempt to move to a consumption tax in lieu of income tax in the US. We would also give any country with such a deal in place the ability to shift VAT revenue to income tax based revenue and unilaterally reduce our tariffs on them.

Then we will raise them 25% more. They need us more than we need them.
