Need to find a supplement, topical lotion, etc. to heal joint pain ...

I'm over 50 and I started working out and jogging again to get back in shape. I'm just getting back to normal after recovering from Stage IV kidney cancer (lucky SOB). I've been weightlifting hard for 2 months and feel great about that, but I incorporated jogging to try and drop some weight (need to lose about 30-40 pounds), but I'm having some major pain in my knees after each jog (actually doing run/walks).
Has anyone ever used something they feel works great for this issue. I'd prefer a lotion/cream but would take pills if necessary. I'm already taking Glucosamine Sulfate and Potasium Chloride, which helps, but not enough. I only have one kidney now due to removing it for the cancer treatment, so I can't take anything that would be too hard on my one kidney.

I used to drink Joint Juice when they still sold it.
If you're a big boy, you probably shouldn't be jogging at all. You can borderline speed walk (without the weird arse clenching you see competition speed walkers do)and many other things (rower, bike, etc.) that don't exacerbate the pain in your knees caused by the extra weight. Get your heart rate into the right zone without the impact.

I'm only 30-40 pounds overweight and I'm in good shape other than my stomach (beer belly). I have a lot of endurance.
I've tried other exercises for weight loss and jogging by far is the best for me. I get bored with some of the other exercises and lose interest.

I was in the same boat about 10 years ago. While I can't help with the supplement side of things, I can tell you that correcting my running FORM by watching youtube videos and such made all the difference in the world to me. My knees were just aweful the 1st 6 months after I began running, but have had no issues at all with them since I corrected my form.

Try Voltaren gel or one the generic copies. It's an a topical NSAID created for arthritis.

Whenever I used to feel my joints were starting to hurt I would add Fish Oil to my daily regimen. It works very well. Nowadays, I take fish oil every day and it does a good job keeping the joint pain at bay. If my joints start aching I up my dose of fish oil for a couple of weeks.
With that being said, my joints were aching because of something. Could be form, could be too much volume. Find out what that is for you and fix that.

Most of the time joint pain comes from inflammation and while there are several good approaches to inflammation including diet modification the "magic elixir" that has been absolutely phenomenal FOR ME is turmeric. A guy I know who's a naturopath turned me onto this as I've had knee pain from being a long distance runner from grade 6 until my late 20s. Ortho told me I'd need knee replacement at some point in the future. I also had a really strained tendon in my elbow from shoveling snow that never seemed to go away. At 60 years old I'd made my peace that I would always ache. I tried the glucosamine, corticosteroid or hyaluronic acid injections nothing provided lasting relieve.
I started taking this, doesn't have to be this brand it's just what I take from Costco. If you don't use this brand, make sure it's got black pepper extract in the blend as that opens the gateway for the turmeric to be bio-available to the body. After a few weeks I noticed "hey my knees don't ache any more ...that's interesting", so just to test it I stopped taking it - pain returned. I resumed taking it, pain went away. YMMV but for me I'm convinced. I've made the same suggestion to many of my same-age friends and without exception they all report the same results. FYI though, rheumatoid arthritis my not respond to this since it's auto-immune not inflammation based, I don't know.
There are other very good natural anti-inflammatory supplements such as garlic, ginger, etc. Another one that I found very interesting as a topical point-specific anti-inflammatory is nicotine. I'll dig out the webcast of a doctor talking about cutting nicotine patches into strips and applying it directly to knuckles, knees, shoulders etc for an inflammation reducer. He also spends a good bit of time debunking the FDA's claim that nicotine is "highly addictive" - when they really mean the additional chemicals that big tobacco adds to cigarettes to enhance their addictive properties.

I think voltaren could be very helpful like someone else suggested.

It has nothing to do with my form. I’ve ran for decades without issues (even when overweight).

Someone mentioned this a few weeks back in a different thread.
It has been a godsend. Got from Amazon

FYI Costco has Kirkland brand. $27 for 3 tubes the other day when I picked some up. It’s been helping shoulder pain a little after chest day.

I researched Voltaren gel and Turmeric supplements and it seems Voltaren may be an issue for me (possible issues with kidneys). Turmeric actually may help my kidney function and gets a boost when combined with Magnesium, which I already take.

Listen to your body. Walk instead of jog. Add
a weight vest or walk inclines
if you need to up intensity

Voltaren
It used to be Rx only a while back, available at Walmart OTC now. But the underlying issue is that it's likely due to degrading tendons and ligaments, which do not repair themselves. Masking the pain won't prevent more damage (referring to the Voltaren, it's like Ben Gay.)
But all of these are cheap solutions you can try out at low cost without much risk. Pick one and try it for 2-3 weeks.

NSAID’s are discouraged for individuals with kidney disease or who have had a kidney removed. You should consult your nephrologist before going this route.
Tumeric data suggests it’s benefits would provide you the relief your looking for.

Voltaren is a good suggestion, but you’d really benefit from some Knees Over Toes Guy stuff.
Backwards walking up a slight hill would probably make a big difference for you.

I'll second the rec for turmeric, I've been using it along with cutting out 99% of my alcohol intake which has greatly reduced my joint pain.

I'm over 50 and also a runner. You can't out run a bad diet anymore.
quote:
need to lose about 30-40 pounds
Your life will change when you fix your diet. 40 lbs is a frickton of weight to lug around running. Fix your diet to lose the weight and the aches of running will disappear.
Get on a 2k calorie diet and don't reward yourself by overeating just because you ran.

There are definitely ways to repair and strengthen ligaments and tendons. With significant tears, you are partially right. The body will repair that tear with scar tissue, which will not be as strong as non-injured tendon/ligament tissue. But you can do exercises/massage techniques to help remap that tissue and make it stronger.
Eccentrics and Heavy Slow Resistance (HSR) are great ways to strengthen/repair tendons (with the caveat of "not for acute injuries"). Ligaments are much harder and require much more knowledge. Full tears, ortho/surgical intervention. Partial tears, a good PT should square you away.
