When did roller derby stop being a widely enjoyed spectator sport?

I remember when I was a kid, my dad took me to the roller derby at Hirsch Coliseum. It was the San Francisco Bay Bombers against somebody. It was exciting, and the place was packed.

Nowadays the only roller derby out there is tatted up fat chicks doing it as a niche hobby, or chasing people through the French Quarter with plastic bats.

Just another reason why kids in the 70's had the best life.

It had a little bit of a resurgence a few years ago.

One of the local teams was called Confederacy of Punches, which I thought was funny.

Not sure if they're still doing it though.

I used to love the RD show that came on in the 80s/90s on (I think?) Saturday mornings. That shite was fyia.

When it was revealed the entire thing was choreographed, rehearsed and fake.

I remember when Juliet went undercover as a roller derby girl. She was fiya in that derby outfit.

I went to a local event about a decade ago.

It was a good time.

Best name of one of the roller girls was “panty drop her”

She was the Wayne Gretzky that night.

Not throwing shade because I really don't know much about it

But growing up without any direct experience, I got the impression that the modern iterations of it were very counterculture/gay (like actually gay)

You see this as a problem, I see this as conflict resolution.

Bull dykes like money too.

I would say that the teams where 50/50 in terms of if the girls were lesbians.

But I don’t care what orientation they are when watching the derby. It’s all good fun.

Holy shite! I remember that …. Completely forgot about those.

I’ve been to some as an adult and the rink always looked bigger on tv.
