Starting tomorrow there's 7 games left in 2 weeks for him. They're already in the playoffs. They can play loose and he will get the record.

He’s a great scorer but still can’t touch Gretzky.
Gretzky has 1963 assists to go with all those goals. Ovechkin? Like 724.
Again, still a great player, but nowhere near the best one as an offensive threat.

What is really wild is that he is still in the top 15% for shots on goal, accuracy, and goals.

Gretzky is probably the GOAT but it's hard to compare eras.
The Great One played in 15 or the top 23 highest scoring seasons in NHL history. The highest for Ovechkin ranks 34th and goes down from there.

Gretzky largely scored goals as an afterthought, and was much more of a playmaker. They're apples and hand grenades.
