You get a 4th and 12 from your 28 - you convert you keep ball

Too easy in today's game, maybe like a 4th and 20.

I like it as well. Surprised the number of times I've seen it converted, though.

Not so easy in the UFL.

I love watching UFL but there's a reason these guys aren't in the NFL.

I guess the distance depends on what the NFL feels is the appropriate success rate. Historically onside recoveries were closer to 20%, the last 3 years it’s been about 5%. Recoveries this past year actually went up to 6% with the new rules

But unless they tweak rules to help the kicking team they might as well ban onside kicks altogether. Even if kickers hit it perfectly it’s damn near impossible to recover. Hands teams today are too good

Perhaps that’s been the goal all along - just like moving up the kickoff and touchbacks to the 25 to minimize returns. Now they’re nonexistent and the frog has been boiled

I think there were more kickoff returns this past year than the previous few. And more big returns of over 40 yards. Could be thinking of something else though.

You have to eliminate the surprise onsides kick to get to the accurate number.

20% seems very high.

make it where you can’t get a first on any non flagrant personal foul (P.I., etc.)

You get the yards but it’s still 4th and 12 or something. There’s ways to make it work.

Not a bad idea, they should increase the distance every time you try it - first attempt is 4th and 12, second attempt 4th and 24, third attempt is 4th and 36.

Getting 12 yards on a play is way, way easier than recovering an onsides kick, that's why.

Better alternative: offense gets it 4th & 30 from their 10 while defense has to let John Chavis or a Pelini brother call the defensive play.

NFL published the stats recently and while concussions per kickoff return were down, the total amount of concussions on kickoffs stayed the same because there were more returns.

So no improvement in player safety with the new rule and the plan is to move touchbacks to the 35, which would increase the amount of returns and create more concussions than before the new kickoff rule.
