Montverde Academy has produced many NBA and college basketball players including Cooper Flag and Ben Simmons. What’s the story with this place? Who funds it? How does a guy like Cooper go from Maine to this prep school in Florida?

I don't know but their 2019 roster had 5 starters go to the NBA. Cade Cunningham, Scottie Barnes, Moses Moody, Caleb Houstan, and Day'Ron Sharpe.

It replaced Oak Hill as the premier basketball factory.

He doesn't want to keep playing a bunch of guys that will be mechanics a few months after the high school season ends.

When I was a kid, I was fascinated by this SI article from 1987 on Oak Hill.

So if he was in Chicago he'd have stayed at his high school? What do they become a few months after the high school season ends?

There was also flint Hill Prep in Oakton, VA back then. Dennis Scott is an alum.

Stu Vetter was the coach. Randolph Childress and George Lynch also played there.

Not necessarily but he's way more likely to play against fellow high level players there.

Question isn’t why but how. Recruiters from the youth scene recommend players? Shoe companies involved?

Yeah. Monteverde has to beat out Oak Hill, Link Academy, La Lumiere, and all kind of other random basketball factories that pop up.

King High in Chicago used to be a beast.

I remember going see Ben Simmons as a senior right after he committed to LSU. They were playing at the Alario Center and they were loaded

I was so shocked we kept Mitchell Robinson for his senior year… I thought Oak Hill, etc. would be all over him as a 5 star prospect…

They played a riverside team in the championship of Sugar Bowl Classic that also had 4 or 5 D1 players including two time All American Jared Butler. Final score was like 95-80 or something crazy for 8 minute quarters of a high school game

Montverde is an actual school at least unlike places like Prolific Prep

2023 had Cooper Flagg(Duke), Liam McNeely(Uconn), Derik Queen(Maryland(and yes he walked)), Asa Newell(uga) and Robert Wright(Baylor). All in the top 28 composite on 247.

My guess is this goes down as the best high school team in history up to this point. At least 4 of them will be NBA starters within 5 years

Calipari said just today that you will see these HS hoop factory schools become weaker because now HS kids can get NIL $.

Just imagine some big, rich Texas high school alum base shelling out big money for a Flagg/Queen type. It will happen.

But those schools are catered to basketball vs. being catered to academics.

I remember when Findlay Prep was a basketball powerhouse. Wouldn’t call it a school though like Oak Hill.
