NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The Louisiana Crawfish Festival is tightening enforcement of state seafood labeling laws after one vendor was caught selling imported Chinese crawfish Friday evening without displaying the required signage.

Festival Secretary Cisco Gonzales Jr. told FOX 8 the issue was brought to their attention by a festivalgoer who noticed the vendor’s crawfish appeared to be from China — and that there was no sign identifying its origin.

Louisiana law requires vendors to post signs indicating whether their shrimp or crawfish is imported or domestic. Gonzales confirmed the vendor did not have a sign and violated that rule.

“We know how important supporting local seafood is in St. Bernard Parish,” Gonzales said. “I come from a family of fishermen. A lot of my uncles and cousins are still down there doing that, and we want to respect that. We want to make sure our vendors respect that too.”

Gonzales said festival organizers are now personally inspecting each seafood vendor to ensure compliance. They’ve instructed all vendors to display origin signage and will provide signage themselves if vendors fail to do so.

I don’t really care if people sell Louisiana or Chinese crawfish.

That’s too far for crawfish to travel live and I don’t want any tail meat from a Chinese meat processing facility.

Packets of Louisiana crawfish tails here where I live typically cost $12-$15, while the same size packets from China go for $7-$10. It seasonally fluctuates but that's generally the cost range.

So when I was back in Louisiana several weeks ago and packets of LOUISIANA crawfish were on sale for $5.79 at Walmart, I grabbed a dozen on my way out of town and my kept them iced down until I could put them in my freezer back home in Dallas. Not a huge savings, $60, but I couldn't resist.

And this is why the government has to actually force the American consumer to pay more for imports - we simply won't act in our own best interests.

regardless if it's a festival or a restaurant, ANY Louisiana establishment serving Crawfish (or Shrimp) that isn't from the state should be called out and publicly shamed.

the ONLY reason they are doing it is to save a dollar or two. they don't give a shite about you or the state or the city or the local community.

they only care about maximizing their profits all the while lying to their customers about being a "Louisiana" establishment. that's it.

Probably a silly question but how does one differentiate exactly between Chinese and Louisiana crawfish?
