"The filing goes on to accuse the fraternity of multiple negligent acts, including failing to have adequate safety measures in place for this formal, allowing excessive drinking on the charter buses that transported the fraternity to Nashville, and the absence of chaperones or advisors among other accusations. It lists 32 fraternity members including presidents, officers, leadership, and brothers.

The lawsuit accuses the fraternity of peer pressuring Strain to attend the Nashville formal "

Look, I feel absolutely horrible the student drowned and I'm sure that better oversight was needed.

However, ultimately, the student made the decision himself, peer-pressure or not, to go to that formal and get that drunk. And that sucks and sounds harsh, but it's the truth...

I'm sure they're full of grief over losing their son, but suing a fraternity for allowing adults to drink seems frivolous. I mean, they wanted chaperones to babysit grown men all night?

Thank you again for your texts. I appreciate your willingness to work with me, but I decided to buy a Kia Telluride instead.

I just read their sequence of events and what the PI hired BY THEM had to say. I am sorry to hear of the news, and while tragic, this is a completely bogus case and another example of our broken sue happy system. This will not bring your son back, nor ease the pain of losing him.

It is frustrating that this country take basically zero personal accountability anymore, and everything is always someone else's fault.

There needs to be massive tort reform across this country.

Adults don't have chaperones. That being said, these lawsuits are often just a coping mechanism for dealing with the loss. Their pain was probably exploited by some lawyer who suggested this recourse and is going to get paid now win or lose.

People sue for everything esp when a loved one dies. The US Government has been sued numerous times for people falling in hot thermal water in Yellowstone, campers eaten by bears in state parks, etc etc.

Tort reform would go a long ways to ending this.

Delta Chi

I’m sure it’s different from school to school but the Delta Chis at my college were the closest thing to Animal House I’d ever seen. Total losers that couldn’t get into any other fraternity and partied like they would never be invited back next year. They bought an old apt complex en lieu of a traditional frat house.

When I was a senior in high school we were offered a tour of the different fraternities that we may be interested in our freshman year. We got to the Delta Chi House (apt building )and shite you not - The first apt/room they had us view, some guy had a high school chick asleep in bed with him. Kinda awkward

not shocking

there's never any personal responsibility taken in cases like this. In fact, personal responsibility doesn't exist to a large segment of the population anymore. I was in a frat and recently graduated and cant imagine having a frickin chaperone while I was out drinking

eta: just saw they are actually suing individual members. Wow. frick these people

Agreed

Show me where someone forced him to get blackout drunk, walk off by himself and fall into the river.

It’s a tragedy, but it’s not a crime or anything meeting the threshold for litigation or liability.

yeah suing the individual frat dudes is actually insane and a terrible look. I’m guessing they probably have parents with money who the lawyers are targeting

Personal responsibility is a thing of the past. Sorry your kid died, but the ultimate choices that led to his death, were his. Starting with joining a fraternity. I hate scum lawyers. Everything is a money grab now. Hell, the families of some of these morons that take headers off cruise ships sue the cruise line. How TF is that anybody’s fault but the idiot that jumped?
