Are aircraft carrier groups [ours] obsolete in the age of hypersonic missile systems?

As I understand in an all out conflict our carrier groups are supposed to last 5 days on all out combat.
If China launches 350 hypersonic missiles at a group some say it won’t last five minutes. We have in excess of 5k people on a carrier now.
Thoughts, arm chair admirals?

Something tells me that WW3 will be 5 minute Blitz Chess rather than a classical length game.

Possibly.
Hypersonic makes intercept much more difficult, but not impossible. Depends on how robust your defense system is.
They simulate this sort of thing on Grim Reapers/Sea Power.

I can’t remember the quote but I’ll paraphrase:
I don’t know what WW3 will be fought with but I know the war after it will be fought with rocks and sticks.

As long as they know that will result in some ICBM’s with special effects mounted on them headed their way.

Hypersonics fly at low altitude and because of there speed are almost undetectable. We have them as well. It’s a serious World now. We need peace.

Our aircraft carriers can launch aircraft that can obliterate 99% of the Earth’s countries.
The combined United States carrier fleet vs pick a continent other than Asia, would be firework display.

I listen and watch Ward Carrol’s vids a good bit and it’s a major concern of his now.
My concern is are we still building ships if the line. Aircraft ended that era and has hypersonic deliveries ended this one or are we because of contracts turning a blind eye to evolves?

That is why countries are investing in guided energy weapons.

Yes so are tanks in the age of cheap drones and soon enough jets will go the way of lumbering unathletic centers in the NBA

Aircraft carriers don't go anywhere alone. They are surrounded by several support ships capable of some wicked shite on their own. But if we get involved in a war with a nation that has the ability to launch multiple hypersonic missiles, it'll be our submarines that may decide the fight. We have 66 nuclear subs. Russia has 31, and they are trash. China has 12.

Well, I’m a boomer and what was spoken is true from his point of view. It might be dated in the era of response though…

There are four reasons why hypersonic maneuverable missiles don’t make aircraft carriers obsolete.
1. The weapon itself is only one part of the kill chain. You have to find the carrier group and track its location in real time for the hypersonic or any weapon to have a chance at hitting the carrier.
2. In order to counter the threat of hypersonics the US Navy has devoted resources into extending the operational range of carrier groups making them harder to find and hit.
3. Carrier strike groups are a collective of systems progressively developed and tuned over lifespans lasting decades. Weapons and countermeasures are developed and made obsolete over the span of a few years at a time. You cannot determine obsolescence of a multi decade system due to the ebbs and flows of weapons and counter measures.
4. Most potential adversaries do not possess maneuverable hypersonic anti ship missiles.

Thats a bingo. The major powers know they are a sitting duck vs each other. But effective against the rest of the planet. Subs and such are still lethal.
The hypersonic boogieman is just that. They can't turn.

We won’t know until we know.
They are certainly MUCH more vulnerable because of the hypersonic than they have been, and force composition and development is starting to reflect that. The Navy is spending a frick ton trying to counter the threat from hypersonics and drone swarms

A sub or ten launching near fleet weapons will be more than enough. Hyper weapons have a problem. When they turn due to "hyper speed" they tear apart.

China or Russia could fire the hypersonic missiles and they are great for stationary targets. Aircraft carriers are always moving and guidance systems can’t yet overcome the plasma interference hypersonics create. So hypersonic missiles can’t change course mid flight.
Also, Aegis is a near AI system that can detect a golf ball 100 miles away (that we know of). It can hit a satellite in orbit. You’re asking if it can hit a missile not as high moving not as fast?
The navy is also testing two laser defense systems that show immense promise. Today’s strike group would wipe the floor against a 2000 American strike group. The tech has come that far.
