He has stated numerous times that all of his personal loss is worth it. He truly believes he is saving the country - and I do too.
The threats to his life (and his family’s lives) are constant. He knows that, and he persists.
That, IMO, is the mark of a man of profound conviction & morality.

How are other EV manufacturers doing in those markets?
I suspect the Chinese MFRs are dominating in China. I also suspect the shine is off of EV's in a lot of markets for a lot of reasons, including battery fires, lack of charging infrastructure, repair and insurance costs, plus the push back on Musk.
Definitely the press is going negative on Telsa and everything associated with Musk.

I don’t think he really cares about money. I think he may regret his companies are hurting because it will likely hamper his vision. Ultimately, I think he believes he had no choice. The spending and regulations in the country were going to choke off any growth and we would turn into Europe. He’s literally saving the country and I don’t think anyone else could do it.

I dont think Musk is overtly worried about the impact on his networth, Tesla could go to zero and his lifestyle wouldnt change. Musk will still be on of the top 10 wealthiest people in the world.
His stake in SpaceX (he owns 40%) is worth $100b alone, and SpaceX is not impacted by public consumers. There is no real alternative to SpaceX for contracts in space, every one of their competitors is eons behind

There's still a shite load of Tesla's where I live running around. Randomly I see other manufacturers EVs mostly the Ford ones because they lost so much money on them they practically beg people to buy them at highly discounted prices with zero percent financing. EVs will be a novelty they aren't sustainable for the masses. I don't hate them I like technology but they are not practical In grand scheme of things. Musk is doing God's work he will be rewarded in the end.

SpaceX has caught 3 rocket boosters. Has routinely resupplied the ISS, and is currently returning astronauts stuck up there for nearly a year.
Elon positively contributes to humanity before 9AM on any given day more than you will your entire life.
