Will old Highway 90 through the Pearl River EVER reopen?

I used to love driving to Bay St. Louis through there. It was, for some reason, the most relaxing drive in the world for me.
Seems like it's been closed for freaking ever.

Only way I'll drive it.

I miss it too. There are no funds allocated, just estimates of massive expense. Plus you have two states that both need to approve.

It’s gone baw. Time to move on

The stupid arse State spent 11-ty hundred million on replacing the US 90 Rigolets bridge and can’t tell everyone the West Pearl US 90 bridge is permanently closed to marine traffic and spend $8m to replace the 1933 structure there.
I suspect the three little bridges on the Middle Pearls are all functionally obsolete as well at the state line bridge. That swing bridge would be expensive to replace. A bascule bridge would probably be cheaper.
tl/dr:all five bridges from Pearlington to the West Pearl need replacing, so they close one and the others die on the vine.

There was a small light duty two lane bridge in Pearl River that was condemned years ago - it took nearly five years for the state to rebuild it.
That 90 bridge aint happening.

I used to love that drive
From my childhood neighborhood on the coast to my dorm in New Orleans, there were only two turns
I remember after Gustav seeing all the dead nutria. Poor little guys. You’d think giant water rats would have a better aquatic gameplan
I can’t think of two worse states having to come together logistically for the good of their citizens than the two that share that stretch of road

The specific bridge that is closed is the US 90 West Pearl River bridge.
It’s over 90 years old and just plain wore out.
The three little bridges over the Middle Pearl branches are also all in Louisiana.
The East Pearl River Bridge is a swing bridge from 1933. It’s on the State line so the two states would have to figure something out.
Ordinarily one State manages a state line bridge and the other contributes funds for it.
Or two States swap out: you take state line bridge x and we’ll take State line bridge at Y.

You’d think they could get some FEMA money to replace the bridge or something since there’s only one east/west evacuation road now. What a clusterfrick.
Posted on 3/14/25 at 3:27 pm to JackieTreehorn
Should be replaced as it is a viable route for evacuations during hurricanes. I-10 is the only other route and that is not acceptable.
Posted on 3/14/25 at 3:28 pm to Y.A. Tittle
They just need to flat deck it and be done. There’s very very minimal marine traffic that would be affected by not having a swing or draw bridge. This would reduce the cost by tens of millions of dollars.

Its a US Highway. Why aren’t the feds putting up funding for this?
Plus its a major hurricane evacuation route. The only east-west route besides I-10 until you get to Bogalusa

Mississippi has been trying to get LA to help fix it, but LA has stated it's not a priority and/or they don't have the money

I-10 is like 10 minutes away from it
I can think of better ways to spend the estimated $300 million it’ll take to replace the bridges

Looks like this is the “new” state design.

Several of these types have gone up in the Lafourche and Terrebonne area for movable bridges. Mostly concrete construction, instead of metal girders and supports.
Big issue with one of the bridges under construction in Bourg right now is that some of the electrical components are already obsolete and have to be redesigned. The Bourg bridge like that started in May of 2021 and was supposed to be done by May of 2024. DOTD keeps moving the goal posts and now they told TPCG mid April. A similar bridge is going up in Galliano to connect the 4 lane to the airport. That one may take until the end of the year.
These Bridges cost tens of millions to construct each depending on the size. I think DOTD said it was a 350 million dollar project for US 90 bridge replacements.

I-10 has also been a cluster frick and basically a parking lot during past hurricane evacuations, so another east-west route would be important.
Or if there's a situation where I-10 is down to one lane because of road work or some other issue.
Remember a year or so ago when that truck caught fire on I-10 westbound bridge over the Pearl River coming into LA? Interstate was down to one lane for almost a month because they had to make repairs due to that fire. Now imagine how bad that traffic would be with one lane closed on I-10 and Hwy 90 still closed

Wasn't LA trying to give away that old bridge for the taking as long as it was repurposed (not scrapped) ??

Wish it would reopen, but no political will to do so, and bridges make it more complicated.
At a minimum would take someone from St. Tammany Parish to step out and push for it, but instead Louisiana spends 10s of millions in the same parish up by Bush to widen a perfectly fine 2 lane road to a 4 lane road that still goes to nowhere.

The Serpentarium!
I used to like to use 90 to get to the coast…sometimes turn off onto a random streets near Pearlington and just see something different.
