He was 3rd in BA and 4th in HR on his high school team
LINK

That wasn't an elite national travel/showcase team but a high school team. I can't fathom the level of high school competition that it makes sense for that BA to be tied to a very elite prospect. Right now he is batting 136 points higher against D1 (mediocre before SEC play) college pitching than what he faced in high school. He probably finishes his first season at LSU with a better BA than his last season of HS.

In no way am I bashing Curiel, he could have one of the best freshmen seasons in LSU history. I just find this very interesting and thought some of you would too. I admit it exposes my ignorance on how the scouts could correctly identify a guy that didn't hit for power or average in high school. There are many reasons I am not paid to evaluate baseball talent.

Bryce Ranier and Seth Hernandez are a couple of the guys he faced.

They're better than any pitcher he's faced this year in external competition.

I'd bet he also participated in a showcase league during the summer that was pretty stout.

BA may be one of the last things these guys are evaluated on. As long as it's not astronomically low, scouts and teams know how to get the most out of guys if they have good measurables and approach.

Curiel's plate approach is elite and has a very favorable frame. That makes for a very juicy prospect.

He also came to campus early and got coached up. I mean it’s not crazy that he got better.

Sometimes these elite guys have a harder time actually hitting against some garbage pitcher throwing 72mph and being all over the zone than they do when locked in vs another elite recruit.

He had teammates he graduated with that are at Arkansas, Ole Miss I think, and one kid starting at Loyola Marymount with 4 homers already.

He had teammates a year younger than him committed to Texas, Texas A&M, and Tennessee.

He played against Corona, where LSU commit Brady Ebel goes. And they have 4 potential 2025 1st rounders.

He's in the most talent rich area in the country where the big time baseball high schools attract all the best players around.

not sure what his stats were earlier in high school career but he was projected not to make it to LSU before his senior year

lack of power may have been a part and once he pulled his name from draft we never found out what MLB was going to offer him or where they would draft him to make him not go to LSU

it's a win for LSU and no matter the competition to date you can see his approach is way advanced for a true fr

since he's also a draft eligible soph it might have made his decision easier, rather then toil away in the minors and now he can work on getting stronger and if he starts to show power he will go high in 26 draft

he could go a combined 0-30 against them 2 guys (30 AB alot) and still hit well over 500.

Most of us grew up in Louisiana playing against high level competetion. My freshmen year our varsity had 8 guys go to college. All of them hit better than that average wise that wasnt pitching.

Not a big deal, but not sure if he should be considered 3rd best BA on his team when one of the other guys possibly played less than half the amount of games.

I could be wrong though. I didn't look it over too carefully. I think at one point in High School he was ranked the #1 player of his class. I can see why now.

Besides getting stronger, he gets to play in the SEC, rail cleat chasers, and use facilities light years ahead of any minor team. Dude was super smart for being patient.

And, if the stats at the top of that page are correct, Orange Lutheran is the #1 baseball team in California and 4th in the nation.

They were last year. Corona is this year. Orange Lutheran's coach (until this season, he retired after last year) also coached with Team USA a lot. Very highly respected HS coach.

When he straps on those gloves as a base runner.... all i hear is "Run, run as fast as you can! You can't catch me. I'm the Gingerbread Man!"

Sometimes you just hit a physical jump in strength around that age. Also have more time just to focus on baseball rather than all of the other bullshite in high school.

When you have the reputation he had…you often don’t see many good pitches. He probably didn’t have someone like Bear Jones hitting behind him also.
