You might have a business that paid a tariff, but thats a whole different tax structure, than the raising or lowering taxes on all Americans proposed by Trump. Relatively small numbers of Americans own tariffed businesses. Most are owned by corporations

The purpose of tariffs is to disincentivize the purchase of certain foreign goods in a domestic market. You can argue whether or not that hurts the individual consumer, but it unquestionably helps the industries that employ American workers. If those industries aren’t competitive, they have no ability to employ American workers.
