You can argue whether or not that hurts the individual consumer, but it unquestionably helps the industries that employ American workers.

This is simply not true. It may help some industries, but it hurts others. Think of all the companies that use steel in manufacturing their products. Raising steel prices via tariffs raises their costs, lowers their profitability and production and reduces employment in those businesses.

If Trump wants to use tariffs as a short term bargaining strategy, fine. But let's not fool ourselves. Tariffs will raise prices, reduce efficiency and increase unemployment if maintained for an extended time period.

We don’t need Canadian steel. We produce like 8x as much steel as they do. Will those companies you’re talking about have to find new suppliers? Maybe. Shouldn’t be hard since Canada isn’t even in the top 15 of steel exporters. Meanwhile, Canada is tariffing America’s steel producers 25% and has been for a long time. Do you think that makes American steel competitive in Canadian markets? That’s the problem when tariffs are one-sided. Our industries are naturally handicapped for no good reason. That has to come to an end.

Once again, this ignores reality. If Canada could not produce steel at or below competitive prices in the U.S., then users would not import it anyway and tariffs would be irrelevant. To the extent U.S. steel users do import Canadian steel, it is because they cannot get steel of the same quality for a better price from other sources, including from U.S. steel producers. Thus, imposing a tariff harms those users and drive up the prices of the products they produce. It's basic economics.

I wondered how a 27 y/o would be able to do that job...and it appears she is doing just fine.

All she has to do is say

“If tariffs are so bad, why do so many countries including Canada have them against the US?”

That's not hard to answer, though. Other nations' cost of living and cost of production, and the US refusal to complain, is why they impose tariffs.

Yes they will. They will be removed when the other country removes theirs. It makes things more affordable for buyers on both sides.

The point you seem to be missing is that we rely less on imports, particular on things we produce ourselves, when our own industries are allowed to thrive and compete in markets where they’re not handicapped by one-sided trading agreements. If we’re competing on a level playing field, then sure, reward the one that is most cost effective at the best quality. But that’s not happening in a lot of cases right now.

she should have told him if he wouldn't have bought that LV purse for himself there wouldn't have been a tariff.

It’s not an argument over if it hurts consumers or not - tariffs hurt consumers 100/100 times

The question is whether that consumer pain worth on-shoring that production is a net gain for the country or not in the form of national security (I.e steel production) and Econ (high paying jobs)

The reporter clearly stepped over a line and was rightly called out.

Trading tariffs for American jobs.
