Jesus.

He was a good person but these days people act like he had no flaws. He admittedly told people to not wash their hands, which is kinda gross.

One of the primary examples.

The other really big one that comes to mind is Ross Gellar on Friends.

He went from a loveable dweeb to a legit over the top psycho

I love the show but pretty much every character in Always Sunny.

At this point the characteds are all so retarded that the business wouldve burnt down or fallen apart years ago.

I know it is the complete anti-thesis of the show but id love to see one od the characters accomplish something successfully that explains how the bar is still open

McNulty on The Wire. Every season became them trying to one up from the previous one how he self-destructs and what illegal tricks he’s going to pull to solve the case. It was damn good television but I still had to roll my eyes at the shite he was doing

Really great examples so far. This illustration demonstrates the effect

Characters have a way of becoming caricatures or their former selves over time.

The entire cast of Married With Children is a great example too.

The early seasons they almost seemed like actual people, but by the end they were cartoon characters.

Roseanne did a great job of keeping characters real and grounded -- except maybe Jackie -- until that fever dream of a last season, but that was semi explained in the finale.

This. Also, Joey Tribbianni from Friends, to a lesser extent.

Early on in the series, Frank was wealthy. Maybe he paid for the bar outright. It's when he started living with Charlie that things started going off the rails.

This was going to be my suggestion.

Kevin was great when he was just a little slow on some things, but was still smart. Early episodes where he was a WSOP bracelet winner, had a fiancee', etc. were great. Which is why it was so hilarious when Holly started and Dwight made her think Kevin was retarded. But then in later seasons he became legitimately mentally handicapped. It was frustrating to watch.

I know if a show lasts long enough eventually caricatures will form, but man they went so far overboard with Kevin that it was distracting.

I think american primeval will give taylor kitsch a slight resurgance. Wouldnt bet against him showing up in a big budget feature soon

Chang from Community. He was much better early on as an eccentric a-hole. When they made him completely nuts, he became boring.

Sheldon from Big Bang Theory. His "look, I'm kinda human" epiphanies became a weekly occurrence.

Olivia from Law & Order SVU. The series went from interesting an independent plots to "oh boy. What trauma will Olivia deal with this week (that will lead to her staring off into space as the episode ends)?"

People said the same thing when he was excellent as David Koresh in Waco.

Kitsch is a great actor. Does well with his material. But he can't break to the other side of Hollywood, and I'm not sure I know why.

I had the exact same thought actually. It's one of the few shows that the characters feeling like real people throughout a very long run.
