Are the days of "there's no such thing as bad publicity" over. . .at least for Disney

Saw that Snow White is tracking on the very low end.
Basically every thing they put out that had really bad early press the last few years has been tanking.
Strange World
Buzz Lightyear
The Marvels
Acolyte
Agatha All Along
Snow White
Even throw Cap in there, since it is struggling to hit Quantumania benchmarks
etc.
Now whether you think the bad publicity was unwarranted is fine, but it is also wholly irrelevant.

Specific to Snow White, there's no secret as to why it's trending low.
You take a beloved founding animated movie for Disney, change it up for the 'modern audience', declare it's not about true love, or dwarves, or any of that 'outdated stuff'.... we know the rest.
When you focus on content over creativity, this is the result.

I think bad publicity, like Sweeney and Powell having an affair, still works well. Otoh, telling certain people to stay home and don't watch our films is a really stupid thing to say these days.

I don't really follow the pre release publicly but didn't Moana 2 and The Lion King movie have bad early pub and both were in the top 10?

I think you are right here. Context does matter in what the “bad” publicity is, especially if it’s leaked on purpose.
But Kaiju is right as well. There’s bad publicity, then there’s making a bad product AND telling people to not watch it kind of bad PR

I think that’s true for everyone.
Sony literally rereleased morbius thinking people would see it ironically and it flopped twice.
movies are in a rough spot.
people are selective

More so for Mufasa than for moana, but yes. The pre-release Moana stuff was more review-based, and people clearly didn't notice or care about that
Agatha all along is considered one of the only disney+ wins of 2024, and not for the quality (which was pretty good). It was made cheaply and it charted, which is more than can be said for most of the other Marvel or Star Wars shows.

There’s certainly bad press that is just bad. This movie has gotten nothing but bad press, but even then, if it was a good movie no one would give a shite and it would make a billion dollars.

Disney is so bad at media at this point they could’ve just made a movie about those two having an illicit affair and it would’ve outperformed anything Disney has put together recently.

It's just Lightyear, and that was actually a really good movie. But they shoehorned a gay (female) couple in there and IIRC were bragging about it before the movie was released, and it pushed people away.
But the movie itself is actually pretty good. My son (big Buzz fan) loved it.

Moana 2

The Lion King
Mufasa is a great example. Movie is mid as hell, at best, and still made 700 million on a 35 mill opening

When they stop benefitting from protective cover from the MSM when it comes to deviants & perverts that work at their amusement parks, animation studios, etc., it's game over for their "wholesome" brand.

And Skeleton Crew, a fun family Star Wars adventure, was the least viewed streaming series of any of the Star Wars line. The show itself didn't get bad pub but the acolyte and Disney's overall production of Star Wars material did.

I enjoyed the movie, it’s an odd spinoff though. It feels like a generic sci-fi movie script that get rewritten to be about buzz lightyear.
it’s in my mind maybe a little too intense for the younger end of the Toy Story Audience but there are some genuinely funny moments and a lot of pretty
cool homages to the TS version.

I couldn't even finish lightyear, seemed like trash to me
Once you realize the entertainment industry is controlled by the CIA and exists more to control the population like the coliseum in rome of the old days it makes perfect sense.
Casting black snape and black little mermaid are desperate attempts to divide the population over trivial shite like race. And they work every time. Our society is foolish

I keep waiting for their stockholders to sue them for failing their fiduciary duty by making decisions they knew were horrible. There's no way they truly believed that lesbian Star Wars would be a hit.

You mean Blackrock/vanguard/state street with their 40% DEI requirement for all companies they are the largest stakeholders of?
