What are the Bengals doing?

They placed a franchise tag on Tee Higgins and will be paying two receivers $50 million next season. Now, they've given permission to their best defensive player, Trey Hendrickson to seek a trade. So the team failed to make the playoffs last year due to an awful defense and then they decide to allocate more resources to their offense while further weakening their defense by getting rid of Hendrickson. I don't understand it.

It really makes zero sense.
No reason to pay 2 WRs but then get rid of your all pro DE on a defense that’s terrible and lacks talent.

Or maybe they realize they got the best 4 year prime of a guy and are going to sell high rather than pay for past production of a guy past 30. IDK.

People on here are looking at this wrong
The Bengals roster has no one worth paying outside of Burrow, Chase, Higgins, and Hendrickson. It’s also a pretty lackluster upcoming free agency class.
It should never have been a choice between Higgins and Hendrickson. A real organization makes all 3 extensions happen. Poverty franchise makes poverty moves.

If only a team could pay 2 top receivers along with the rest of their team. How could Burrow be so selfish!!!

Burrow has been very vocal about what his priorities are so the Bengals are listening. Bengals should've traded Higgins last year but they kept the team together for one last shot at the SB. Burrow better hope they absolutely crush it on their draft picks because they can't afford to miss on anyone especially defense.
