What would realistically happen if we just straight up refuse to send any troops or aid?

A lot of seething, and the both America and Europe end up in drastically better circumstances within a few years

There wouldn’t be anything they could do about it. Article 5 doesn’t force us to do anything

Then I'd say we're done with NATO. Sit back and watch the fireworks I guess.

I believe to invoke Article 5, there has to be a unanimous vote by all members, right?

So, if we just said no, invoking Article 5 would not pass.

The stipulation to offer nothing is something that can happen even with the invocation of Article 5, just from the language of the article.

They can't. There's no Nato country being attacked. If the others want to go play offense in Ukraine that's on them

it would cease to exist which is a good thing since it should have ceased to exist in 1992. america and NATO's reign of terror these last 30 years will cast into the ash bin of history.

Hopefully it accelerates our withdrawal from NATO

This administration has signaled loud and clear its desire to bring hostilities to a close. If they invoked article 5 simply to try and drag us into a war with Russia, we should reject it out right, withdraw from NATO and treat it as a hostile act against the US. NATO is not a death pact and was never intended as an instrument to provoke hostilities with another nation.

Well it would just set precedent so when we screw with China eventually they’ll just sit that one out as well. Not to mention they’d build up their own arms industry (as they are now doing) and take the 66% of their defense budget that they currently use on American weapons and start buying from their own companies.

I think article 5 is invoked if a member country is invaded, not using soldiers as human shields in a non member country to draw fire and escalate things even more in an attempt to prolong the war.

No one would ever trust us again.

Countries (and people) either honor their obligations, or they do not.

It is difficult to find a complimentary adjective for the latter.

Nothing as long as we tweet our support.

You frame all of this like it’s a bad thing.

Them potentially sitting out a fight we are in with China, and putting their dollars into their own companies instead of American companies is not a good thing for America and our companies.

Article 5 stipulates that if a member nation is attacked then the members will join in their defense. If doesn't say anywhere in article 5 that member nations must join when you initiate conflict defending a non member.
