When I was a kid "pearls" were uncommon and highly sought after. I don't think anybody throws the old school "beads" anymore with the little plastic plug/clasp to put them on/off.

Additionally, in the last 10-15 years the amount of LED/blinking throws has skyrocketed! That and plush toys...we get so many plush toys they become toys for the dogs to rip up.

And did spears become too politically incorrect? Don't see them anymore and when I was a kid people would BRAWL over one.

Anyway...Mardi Gras is great.

Krewes were encouraged not to throw them because they were considered dangerous. I saw more this year than I have in years past. I think you thank cheap manufacturing for making the toys and everything else cheaper. Things being cheaper is also why everyone now has a tent and 20 bag chairs to claim their territory.

Is it just me, or has candy at kid's parades gone down? I went to Lake Charles' Children's Parade yesterday, and my kids were justifiably disappointed in the bead to candy ratio.

Maybe I just remember incorrectly, but I thought they threw a lot more candy when I was a kid.

I was disappointed when my kids got back from that exact parade.

Too many tootsie rolls.

We were talking about these types of beads before Mardi Gras started and I caught a pair yesterday during Mid-City. Showed the kids but they weren’t as interested as the adults,

I only recall candy being a thing at my small town of Central's Christmas parade. I don't recall growing up with candy at Spanish Town, St. Patrick's Day, etc.

Yep.... Had my hand stepped on many times when I was a kid, and that was by adults.

Doubloons were a big collectable... You still see some, usually older men, who come around and ask for doubloons. Endymion still makes them.
