My nephew is now playing Varsity HS ball so I have been to probably 8 or so of his games. I haven’t watched HS baseball in probably over a decade or so

One thing I have found pretty annoying is that the pitchers keep trying to pick off the base runners who are on 1st or 2nd base

This happens with both teams each game. I’m not exaggerating but between both teams, there are probably 15-20 pickoff attempts per game between both teams

If this happened for one game, I would be ok with it but it has happened every single game I have watched so far

I guess my question.. is this a normal thing for HS baseball? He plays for a very good program who I think they are ranked top 10 in the state

I just don’t remember seeing this many pickoff attempts in HS ball before and what’s baffling about it is I have not seen one single runner get picked off.

Should they just let them steal 30 bases a game?

Well there are plenty more kids who can just run fast than there are catchers with elite level pop times, so there is that.

Do you understand how to control the running game with less than elite catchers? It’s obvious you don’t get it.

It really depends on the score of the game, the team you are playing, and the part of the line up.

If you have a good pitcher, you are winning by 2-3 runs, and you are pitching against the bottom of the line up then I would suggest that yes the coaches should pushed the pitchers hard to concentrate on the batter.

But as said that’s just the game, teams are going to push base runners to lead off and steal because it’s more difficult for HS kids to throw them out.

That would make it incrementally less boring to watch.

It ain’t the pop times, it’s the arms… HS is most kids’ first time on a regulation size infield

Agree totally

New MLB rules, which I didn’t think I would like, have made high school games unbearable

If the opposing pitcher or catcher is on first base and they aren’t running for him, I’m going to pick over 20 times.
Also, picking is not for picking them off unless the base runner makes a mistake. It’s for managing the runners. Keeps them from getting a lead that can’t be thrown out. Also, mix it in with bri g quick to the plate and the hitter will lose time also. Batter will get stale.
