THR: Star Wars Succession Problem: Who Will Replace Kathleen Kennedy?

But who should Disney choose to inspire greatness in the next generation of Star Wars creatives now that longtime Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy is retiring later this year?
The job hunt will be like nothing before in Lucasfilm history. Star Wars creator George Lucas hand picked Kennedy in 2012 to run the company before selling his ownership stake to Disney, which elected to keep her in place. Now, for the first time, Disney will pick somebody new to lead its galaxy far, far away.
During her tenure, Kennedy guided the Star Wars brand across many celebrated achievements (such as the franchise’s return to theaters with The Force Awakens and its successful shift to TV with The Mandalorian). She has also been often criticized for the franchise’s many missteps (including some lackluster movies and shows, and overseeing numerous announced-and-discarded projects). The executive — along with Disney in general — has also often been targeted by franchise’s fandom for diverse casting moves and a perceived “woke” agenda (a perception that Disney boss Bob Iger has been eager to move past).
But while Kennedy’s pending retirement might be drawing cheers from fans online, insiders say that replacing the seasoned executive will be rather difficult. Some in the industry — from studio managers to representatives — believe that the company’s senior leadership has done a poor job in training and elevating a next generation of Padawan executives from which to potentially tap a replacement.
“One reason Kathy stuck around for so long is because there is no credible alternative,” said one person who has many interactions with Lucasfilm leadership. Sources say former Lucasfilm executive Rayne Roberts, who was at the company for 12 years, was being groomed by Kennedy as a likely replacement. But just last week, Roberts was announced as Searchlight’s new senior VP of production.
“What people don’t understand is that it’s not a creative job,” says one producer with ties to Star Wars. “That’s about 10 percent. The rest of it is dealing with Disney, licensing and fans.”

Whoever will make Disney Star Wars (other than Rogue One and Andor) a nightmare that Luke wakes up from

Prepare to be disappointed.

reading this it's funny that Disney gets blamed for "killing" Star Wars under KK rather than Lucas for picking her.

George is the only answer.

Does it matter at this point? Damage is done

Dude exactly. Lucas made attack of the clones which is pure unadulterated excrement.

It doesn't matter. The damage is done.
DV can suck it. Go play with your Reva lightsaber or spend a few days at Galactic Starcru… ooops. Never mind.

I’m confident they’d make more money if I took her place, and I know nothing about movie making, but I can easily read a Star Wars script and tell if it should be green lit or not, and it would be real simple to hire showrunners. “Hey what do you know about Star Wars? Nothing. Oh ok. Get the frick out of here”

I think Leslye Headland has more than earned a shot at running things.

Star Wars is indeed dead, but it's only MOSTLY dead.
There is a time line where the IP re-invents itself to become something the general public is excited about again.
However I seriously doubt Disney is capable of doing it.
Because first thing they have to do is stop cranking so much bull shite out. Scarcity and perceived value go hand in hand. Making 2-3 good Star Wars projects every decade is superior to making 2-3 good ones and 10 terrible ones on top of it. Less is more. People are more invested when they can follow WTF is going on, having a gazillion shows and movies set all over the place with different casts and different periods of time, fine for "super fans", not good for the general public. You also need to have a single, cohesive vision and not 200 different writers and directors out there.
Completely ignoring/discarding the sequel trilogy and starting over post Return of the Jedi would also be huge. Plenty of IP's have completely ignored sequels that failed when trying to start over, to varying results. You'd have 5 minutes of screeching to deal with from the blue hairs and then that would be over and 99% of the rest of the world will be excited.

I don't see how that's possible. Disney had one shot at doing it right and they blew it. Carrie Fisher is dead and Harrison Ford likely will never agree to return to the franchise ever again. All the fans wanted was to see Han, Luke, and Leia together again on the big screen and Kathleen Kennedy couldn't even give us that.

Start with Mark Hamill having a force vision of events, waking up from it and Yoda appearing saying the future is not set. He walks out to his Jedi Academy and boom, start the series….

When has a major franchise ever pulled this off?

If the new showrunner keeps Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy for the new Star Wars Movie we'll know the franchise is screwed.

And even if the need wasn't clear at acquisition, they still could have done so years into her tenure with Disney when bad reviews started rolling in, and they declined to do so.
