That reporter should be fired.
That is an editorializing question.
He could've asked something like this:
"What attributes made you select a retired lieutenant general..."
A reporter saying that ANYONE is "underqualified" for ANY job, is completely unprofessional. It is not their job to determine qualifications.

Regardless of where one sits with SecDef, the reporter asking that question should be categorically ridiculed.
Honestly, if I were a journalist that took my job seriously, I would be incredibly angry with people like this and the damage they do to the industry.

Incorrect, he was fired over the policies he put in place during his tenure that are not in line with the current administrations vision for the department of defense.
