Rolex prices tanking

Recession imminent? I find that luxury goods spend usually is resilient but this time I see stock of watches sitting longer

When you say “tanking” do you mean “steady decline over the last 2 years”?

where do you see this info?

I’m not sure that Rolex sales alone is a leading indicator of recession. My local AD is still months out. I recently asked how long it would take to get a Starbucks and he said 6-8 months. Admittedly; the answer would have been 2 years in 2023.
A friend of mine sent me a pic from a used watch shop he visited in Tokyo last month. Literally hundreds of Rolex’s there; entire display cases full of Daytona’s. IMHO all a bit overpriced. He said the shopkeeper he spoke to said they’ve definitely seen a lot of Rolex’s coming in for sale. Says it’s a mix of tough economic conditions; the secondary market cooling and some public information campaigns associating some brands like Rolex with drug cartels, organized crime and money laundering.
I think there’s also some public backlash against Rolex as many of their AD’s treat potential customers like shite if they aren’t repeat customers. Moreover; I think people are looking at other luxury or semi-luxury brands like Tudor, Grand Seiko, IWC, Panerai and Omega as a statement piece; sort of an anti-Rolex movement (even though Rolex owns two of those, LOL).
I actually plan to visit the same shop in Japan next month just to take it all in. Will post some pics when I get back.

I doubt I'll buy another rolex after how they've treated their clients over the past 4/5 years. ADs can get fricked. They had a bunch available when I was over in Italy recently. Not sure I want to give that company anymore money, though. They also produce a shite ton each year

The blue dial Milgauss is still one of my grail watches. I kick myself for not getting one before they were discontinued. I’ll eventually pick a used one up. To that end; I won’t buy directly from a Rolex AD. Largely because of how I’ve seen them treat people.

Tanking? almost everything desirable will still have a decent wait or will go for thousands above MSRP.

I work on submarines where I inadvertently slam my wrist into everything and none of it is soft. I was gifted a GMT Master II, Pepsi back in 2007. Great gift, but I'm a big dude and it's a 40mm, so it looked like a womans watch on me to begin with. I wore it sparingly when dressed up but probably had it on 100 times over 3 years. One day the bezel popped off. I sent it in to get fixed and between the repair and the cleaning for a watch that was never worn and sat in a winding box, there was a $700 charge.
As much as I'd love a real nice watch again, I simply can't do it and money has NOTHING to do with it.

I've always been a fan of the milgauss. That's one I'd probably pick up too.
Speaking of a-hole ADs. Their used watches that are significantly higher than the grey market is a God damn joke. Who the hell is paying that. I went to mayor's in Tampa a while back and wanted to laugh when they said how much some of the used rolexes were

I think the cost of service and repair is often overlooked when dealing with luxury watches. I recently sent a spring drive action back to Grand Seiko for cleaning and servicing. You can imagine my shock when the watch returned and I was billed $1,500. The darn thing only cost me $3,500 a decade or more ago when I got it.

Mayors can be shitty. I’ve had mixed experiences with them.
About three years ago, a good friend of mine wanted to buy his son his first Rolex for a graduation present. Money is really no object to this particular individual and his son really wanted a new Air King.
So we strolled into Mayors Tampa, and they told us that that there was two showcases, one of which was display pieces and the other of which were available for sale.
As luck would have it, the exact watch his son wanted was in the “for sale”display case. He also found one that he wanted for himself. He told the rep that he would take them both at which point the representative told them that those were not for sale and that there had been some sort of a mixup.
Conveniently, the rep returned from the back with a used Air King, which was priced at almost $2000 more than the new model.
He told them to kick rocks and left. They missed out on two sales by being jerks and trying to upsell them to a used watch.

Maybe I’ll be able to afford one now.

I hope this is true because there are several that I want and haven’t gotten from my guy, even though I’m on the waitlist.

I like watches but have a hard time spending 10k to 30k for something to wear on my wrist everyday. I’d rather buy another sxs or a whole home generator. Maybe for my 50th birthday I’ll get a Rolex but until then I’ve got Breitling and another Omega on my list.

Just get the Rolex if it is what you really want.
I bought so many watches telling myself I would never spend that much on a Rolex that I spent way more than if I had just bought the Rolex in the first place.
Once I finally got my Rolex, I haven't bought another watch since. I got my dream watch. No reason for me to get another.

I'd argue all watches are sliding and have been for 1-2 years now. People are more selective, myself included, and finding great alternatives to Rolex. I've reduced down to a 2 watch collection because it keeps it simple. I think a lot of people are doing this and pushing more supply out.
I'll still get a 226570 when the moment is right, but it's the only one I care for.

You should look into a Sinn U1.

To each his own...
I'd like to pick up a Daytona or Batman, but refuse to pay the 50-100% markup on the secondary market.
And the problem with the waitlists is you never know where you fall.

I’d rather own a $30k Rolex than a $30k car or boat. Rolex will hold it’s value much better.
