My niece's boyfriend got into a wreck and the insurance company wants to total his car

It was his fault. They are trying to lowball him at like 14k.
He had a 2017 Chevy Colorado z71 with 140k miles. He is saying that his truck goes for like 23k.
He told them he wouldn't take the 14k. He still owes like 20k on the truck
Is there anything he can do besides contact the insurance commission?
Has full coverage but I don't believe he had gap insirance.

That's what I was telling him. You usually get fricked

Does he just happen to owe 14K on the loan? At any rate, it should be easy enough to find out the true value of the truck.

if she was a lesbian you wouldn't have this problem

because your asking a message board about your “niece’s boyfriends” lack of gap insurance

The insurance company's valuation of his car is likely less than what your niece's boyfriend is looking up. Also, they'll total the car out once the damages get close to 80% of the value.

Colorados, Rangers, and Dakotas are only like 5k less than a full sized truck and you get half the truck with half the value.

No. It doesn’t. Maybe in the 17k range though so they’re lowballing a little.

I know plenty of people on here have probably dealt with this issue.
It's a good place to get up to date info.
The insurance adjuster even told him he is getting screwed and was calling him on her personal line to help him.

KBB says otherwise.

I told him he can't go off of online sales. It just doesn't work like that.

No the frick they don't.
14k is probably a little high in all honesty.
Kid made a dumb purchase and got upside down. It's his own fault
I'm a dick so I took 2 seconds to look up on cars.com
I sorted Colorado's by the Z71 trim and looked at ones that are 7-9 years old. 14k is an accurate and fair price.
23k will get you a Silverado with 80k miles z71.
The kid is just wrong
Here's the closest comp.

a quick Kelly blue book value is. $10,000 fair condition and $14,000 excellent. So he's probably somewhere in between

Correct. I was actually high in my initial guess. It actually sounds like the insurance company is in line with KBB

He can maybe get $20k but it may make the process last longer and be a pain in the arse. He can probably negotiate it to around $17k within a few days.
