We see Bubba Wallace in the NASCAR promotions as one of the five faces to promote the events. We hear quotes from him regarding Donald Trump's attendance at the Daytona 500 race.

My question is: Is Bubba Wallace relevant as a contendor in NASCAR or is he just benefitting from his skin color? Personally, I don't see him performing well enough to gain the attention that he gets simply from his driving.

What say you?

I don't really care. Nascar blew it by taking up for the clown over what turned out to be a lie. They will never recover.

He has finished second at Daytona in 2018 and 2022 and he won the Duel at Daytona. So yes he's a contender. He has won a NASCAR race and he is in the top half of points most seasons. He is a contender in that sense. He wouldn't have a ride this long if he was truly a bad driver. If Dick Trickle and Dickie May had rides then Bubba is worthy.

Contender as far as what? He's won 2 races. Hardly a contender. He's a never was.

He’s smart. He’s not that good at racing but can get tons of endorsements from woke companies by acting like he’s some oppressed black man. He’s also smart enough to marry outside of his race. He’s a clever dude. I don’t like him though.

Id argue that if he'd have just been a cool guy and not done his woke heel turn he'd be far more popular than he is now. He might have a little less money but he'd be in a better place.

Correct. He chose the money. A lot of mediocre people chase money and never excellence.

He’s in great equipment and not doing much in it. His teammate is proof of that.

So no.

I think at times he leans into a lot of it pretty heavy because it definitely makes the most business sense to him. At the same time he was 10 years old when his cousin was shot by two police officers when he pulled out a cell phone to call his mom. The cops were found not guilty because the young man was in the back seat and put his hands down after being told not to when a gun was observed, so when he pulled a black object out of his pocket...He and IIRC Blaney also both corroborated a story of him being stopped by police for speeding in a Mustang back when he was with Ford and the cop asking him if it was stolen because it was a nice car for a young man and what he did for a job to afford it. I can understand how someone that does have actual experiences during his developmental years would maybe not have the best view of cops as a whole.

I'm not a Bubba fan by any stretch just because I think he has a short fuse and at times acts like he is above his spot in the pecking order because of how much media attention he gets. I'm interested to see how he handles this year because he is the 'premier' car in that garage, but is very likely the 3rd best driver behind a championship contender and a rookie with a ton of talent.

Yes. But the root of him jumping into the BLM scene had nothing to do with cops. It was because he lied about thinking someone put a noose in his garage, when it was a commonly used garage pulley. He’s a dishonest prick. He knew exactly what he was doing.

Jimmy Spencer won exactly as many Cup races as Wallace.
Two.

That wasn't the question though. He's solid enough to have a spot on the grid and he's a pretty good plate racer. But OP is saying he's only in promos and featured the way he is because of his skin color and his comments about it. I think that's accurate.

Devil's advocate... the sponsorship part is different. That's always how racing has worked and popularity is often not based on talent. It's smart for 23XI to employ him from a financial perspective. He's similar to Danica in that way, but he's also similar in that he's not doing nearly enough in top notch equipment. It invites valid criticism.

He has a better car than he deserves because of race. If Michael Jordan wasn't there then Bubba would never be in a competitive car.

I went to one of the Charlotte races last year, he was roundly booed. Saw someone on Twitter say it was because he's black... No it's because he helped implode the sport. Race ended in a rainout declared two hours after the rain stopped, and the mishandling mixed with the putrid traffic and other issues was the final nail in the fandom of my dad. NASCAR can't stop stepping on their own dicks, and are even losing the lifelong older fans like my dad.
