.. was definitely the second British Invasion, eh? I mean….

Oasis
Radiohead
The Verve
Gomez
Blur
Stereophonics
Supergrass
Travis
Muse
Bush

So much incredible music coming out of the UK in those years.

Listened to Gomez’s “Liquid Skin” tonight. I didn’t have a choice but to start this thread (though Bring It On is arguably a MUCH better Gomez record)

No. British influence on US popular music actually declined in the 90s.

In the 80s, U2 alone was bigger in the US than any 5 of those bands combined. Then Duran Duran, Tears For Fears, Culture Club, Wham/George Michael, The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, Eurythmics, Simple Minds, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard.

All of them "invaded" US consciousness in the 80s and were a massive part of teen culture.

Add The Cranberries - I know they are Irish, but they were great.

You left out Pulp and Suede (or The London Suede in the US) If you like that Britpop stuff, give them a listen. Different Class and the self-titled Suede album are great.

I was really in to that scene back in the day. I would go to the EBR Library and read Melody Maker/NME.

You're 100% right. But look man, I drank a lot of bourbon and beer last night, perhaps several tokes, and was on a late 90's British binge, thoroughly enjoying the music. So, at least last night, I felt I was correct..and that's all that matters

Great call. A lot of great calls added by folks.

On the subject, two records I really think deserve a second listen here in 2025.

The Verve “A Northen Soul” — Sparse but layered and heavy. Just a driving, blues-inspired aura with Ashcroft at the top of his game.

Radiohead “King of Limbs” — I hated that this when it came out. Lotus King was pretty good, but meh beyond that. Revisited recently and really enjoyed it. Bonus, considering I’ve avoided it for years, it’s like listening to a new old Radiohead record.

Bush sucked. I know they had hits and the guy married Gwen Stefani. God bless them, good for them. But they don't deserve to be on the list. They were hijacking lumberjack music from PNW and if his eyes weren't so dreamy you'd have never heard of them.

Depeche Mode spilled over into the 90s with some great hits.

The British invasion never really stopped. There were always major British bands and artists in every era.

Suede and Placebo are my grabs from that era. Pure androgyny, and the lyrics spell it out, but the songs were so good.
