Last week the new library tax was discussed on here at length.
Guess what? The new Mayor in EBR is going after those funds to pay for a raise for police officers.
People about to be big mad.

Last week, the mayor pitched moving money currently dedicated to Baton Rouge's library system to fund raises for BRPD officers. That proposal will need approval from the East Baton Rouge Metro Council in March and voters in October.

Ive said this a million time on this site:
Your parishes waste a lot of money, a lot.
The libraries are more staffed and higher paid than you could ever realize.
What you arent thinking about is after 10 years these folks all qualifiy for a pension.
Your money is better spent in LE, especially in Baton Rouge, IMO. At the minimum additional officers and training. This should be a no brainer.
This is a wise move.

If they gave back the 120 million library surplus back to the taxpayers that’s like 500k a person
120 million/ 250k people in br
120 million/ 250k people in br

I really think OT is the place. This has it all. Police, taxes, Baton Rouge, public safety, library system, politicians, butt hurt people who hate libraries, butt hurt people who love libraries.

Your link is to the wrong article.
Sid Edwards announces plan for Baton Rouge to re-hire retired police officers in support roles.
St. George (and the rest of the parish) property taxes are going to pay for BRPD raises.
The proposed library tax renewal includes a decrease in millage. Is Edwards proposing that the difference be redirected into the City-Parish general fund? Or is the mayor's proposal to reduce the total millage and then redirect library millage into the general?

Ouch, he's right

Libraries in EBR Parish have accrued more than $114 million in budget surplus, resulting from years of overtaxation of citizens. Additionally, their budget has been over $60 million for several years, greatly surpassing the national average.

Believe it or not people still use them.
Internet, print off papers for school etc.
They are needed, just not the clip we have them.
Notice they are always hidden except the bigger ones. You wouldnt even be able to guess how many people 1 library employs. After you saw that number you would then ask yourself what the f can they do all day here.
And you are right for asking yourself those questions.

Governments hide money in libraries and education.
Overfund and employ as many people as possible while simultaneously having them indoctrinated by the payee.

The library has surplus funds because the library saves up money to do renovations and build new buildings rather than take out loans. This seems like the most responsible government entity I know of. I don't want to punish them for being responsible by taking away their money.

Who the frick needs huge libraries anymore?
At one time you needed good large and many libraries. Today with the entirety of human knowledge in the palm of your hand you don’t. Even the poorest person is supplied with a smart phone and data. And there is free wifi everywhere.
Ok so you want kids to experience books and people like books. Fine. Libraries still could be much more smaller and run more efficiently. You don’t need the bloated staff and bureaucracy we have nowadays.
Vote against the renewal and vote for a much lower tax rate that they will propose the next voting opportunity.
Vote against putting it in the general fund. It’s just a way for BR to steal from St George for the BRPD. Slick move I must say.

You putting the funds back into the community.
That would be like someone saying why did the librarys get so much money for X amount of years as compared to the road crew but when things reverse in the future we dont want to help the other departments?
This is government people. This isnt competition, its work together.
This is why we suck.

No, it's stupid. The people voted to give that portion of their taxes to the library system. If the mayor wants to pay officers more (which I agree with) he should put it on the ballot (where I would vote for it).
